Yep, agreed. Had to turn it off after less than a minute. Appreciate what they were going for with the Newhart ending but just didn't like it.

I think they filmed it as a response to all of those jokey "what if Breaking Bad was actually Hal's dream in Malcolm in the Middle" theories.

I just love his description of Jesse: "this waif; this man-child who always looked like he was wearing his older brother's clothes."

Not every season of the Wire was strong though. Seasons 2 and 5 were weak. Hated the Port case and the media. Can't ****ing stand this *******:

Every season of Breaking Bad was amazing.

You are correct. The Wire's best season was S3 imo. S2 was weak, the docks were far less interesting than the streets and S5,was by far the weakest season and most unrealistic, for a show that most say was the most realistic show on TV.

Re: No love for Breaking Bad?

It was good. But it needed a sitcom laugh track to make it all the more ridiculous.

Yep, I get it but I'd always kind of groan when someone would post that like it was the first time anyone thought of it. I was looking forward to the finale just so that damn joke would die and now Cranston himself has perpetuated it! :monkey4 :lol

Interesting that people don't seem to have liked S2. That was one of my favourites and I enjoyed the introduction of The Greek, the female cop and McNulty being a thorn in the side of higher-ups in the Baltimore PD. Liked the dock worker cast, too. Agree about S5, though. Didn't care for that season too much.

The Wire should be seen as the sum of its parts. Some seasons were less absorbing than others, but in the end you have a pretty well fleshed out picture of the mechanisations of a city vis-a-vis politics and crime.

I haven't heard anyone - let alone "most" - claim that the show was "the most realistic" on TV. There's a whole bunch of polemic in there and not a small amount of didacticism as well. Where'd you get that from?

Re: No love for Breaking Bad?

I'm comparing how most of The Wire up until the final season, was one of the most realistic show ever, and how the final season veered off that path. S5 was still more realistic than most other shows. Lejuan what was your fav season? I've heard most reviewers consider the best S4, but I still consider S3 slightly superior to S4.

I've just dug around, and sure enough plenty of people have called it "realistic". They have a variety of reasons for that though. Ultimately I rate the show for its ideas more than it's realism - for example I'd say S3's Hamsterdam plot was every bit as fanciful as S5's McNulty-serial killer arc. I'll have to think about how I'd rank the seasons though - S5 was for me the least interesting and most poorly interrogated, but there were a couple of cracker episodes and the finale was satisfying.

Since this is a BB thread, and with plenty saying they enjoyed each and every season, it'd be interesting to see people at least try to rank them :)

It's hard to rank the seasons. Personally I see BB as one continuous story split up into seasons in comparison to other shows where one season may centre around one or two specific topics.

BB kept on evolving with every season and kept on getting better and better. Whereas other shows peak with season 1 or 2 BB didn't reach it's peak until the final season. It was a great journey.

Yeah, I feel the same way. It's a logical progression from amateur, to psycho distributor, on to Gus/cartel and then kingpin (notwithstanding his reliance on Madrigal for overseas distribution and Uncle Jack for the muscle). Really you need them all and there's a flow season to season that just works.

I think most great serial dramas also do this (build off previous seasons) as BB has also done. I also can only think of a few that peaked in S1& S2. If I had to rank the seasons of BB I'd say:

S4 (had the best villian)
S5 (needed to show Walt on top longer)
S2 (only marred by the plane crash)
S1 (needed to be longer)
S3 (weakest villians & whiny Jesse)
