That's not the feeling I got as he visited Skylar,Holly & Walt Jr in that last episode. Standing in Holly's nursery and looking on at Walt Jr as he entered the house, Walt looked like a completely broken man to me.

:exactly: Everyone you love and care about hating you would do that.

As I mentioned I'm revisiting the beginning, for the benefit of my wife, and it's strange looking back on a 'happy' family.

Hm, maybe in some respects he was. Basically though, he only had two options: die with his family loving him but deeply in debt or with them hating him but with the cash he worked for. I think he would've picked the latter every time if he died a thousand deaths. Plus, he went out like a champ, killed the neo-Nazis and saved Jesse. With all the talk of Walt getting Karmic payback, I was just envisioning a more eye for an eye ending.

I think what's getting missed here, too, is I'm not saying Skyler and Jr. hating him is not 'bad' for Walt -- it's just in no way commensurate for all the death and suffering he's directly and indirectly responsible for (and really, think what some of you are arguing -- a mass murderer (assuming we assign indirect responsibility of the jetliner crash on Walt) has been punished "enough" because he dies with his family pissed off at him). Anyway, none of that takes away from the show. Still probably my favourite of all time.

Too little too late my friend. He died a bad man, regardless of what redeeming actions he took in the end. Btw the M60 rigged attack was so badass LOL.

If Walt quit after the $737,000 he wanted things would of been very different...
Greed & power got the better of him.

Exactly. But that's why I felt the show was overly realistic (good thing) In real life that sort of business would corrupt anybody. I think that was the entire point of the show. Good intentions + drug dealing/murder will never end well.

Btw not sure if anyone knows this but both Matthew Broderick and John Cusack were both considered for the part of Walt :lol God bless you Gilligan. ;)

Off topic.."Better Call Saul" to debut in November. :)

I'll watch out of curiosity and my love for BrBa but I feel Better Call Saul shouldn't even exist. His character was a good supporting one but I have no desire to see a show with Saul as the lead. Spinoffs never work(Remember Joey?)I give it 1 season maybe 2 till it gets canned.

Re: No love for Breaking Bad?

This is the test of the spoiler tag.

Well, wife and I finally joined the club and finished BB over the holidays. Man, still thinking about how awesome it is. Such a great series. Cranston is THE man... just a brilliant performance.

I have to say though, I've never seen a greater transformation of a character from start to end like there was with Walt. Incredible writing. Sadly, in the end he was a real monster. Even though we finished the entire series in just over a week I had to take a break here and there. It was a very negative feeling at times. Though I commend the writers and producers at making such a show in a realistic POV.

The scene with Walt and Hank in the garage was absolutely intense. Great tension.

Walt and Skyler ended up being the only two characters whose moral character shifted dramatically over the course of the show imo. Walt because of the power and Skyler because of her love for her children. All the other characters remained fairly constant throughout. I love that one of the central premises of the show is documenting how desperate circumstances and the allure of power can morph an otherwise regular everyday person into a societal monster.

The only criticism I have is that Walt never really got what was coming to him. I was expecting the consequences of his actions to be much harsher than they were.

What others have said about the loss of his family and identity as a father rings true - but even if he didn't get his come uppance, so what? I wouldn't have had a problem had he pulled the pin at the right time and retired to the Bahamas. Narrative karma doesn't exist in real life :lol

I'm glad my girl and me love the same shows. We share different tastes in mindless TV dross, but when it comes to quality we're on the same page :)

Except that Gilligan said in many, many an interview that he likes the concept of Karma and is disappointed that in real life, monsters don't get what is coming to them, and that Breaking Bad was a place where people would face consequences for their actions. So, I took that to mean Walt was going to have some dire consequences coming his way but really he got off the hook pretty easily and died a very redeeming death. They discussed killing Skyler/Jr., but just couldn't bring themselves to do it -- which I totally understand -- but I think it would've been better if they had.

Here's another thing I read, as an example of what made me think Walt was coming to a bad end...

MSTARS NEWS - September 18 said:
MSTARS NEWS: You might get your wish. Vince made it clear that he has no sympathy left for Walt.
Giancarlo Esposito: To hear Vince speak about Walt in this disparaging way makes me sad! [Laughs] I've always had this feeling that, as a writer, you love all of your characters. And at some point, I imagine that Vince has turned against Walter, and Vince is going to exact his revenge. There is a horror coming, and let's hope it's one that will remind us that this road is not one to be traveled by the faint-hearted.
Obviously that's not what happened. Personally, I think the show would've been that much stronger for it, had it been a more tragic/heart-breaking ending. *shrugs*

Beyond that, if all you can say is that you're super happy with what was presented and can't imagine anything different/better, good for you.

@CollectorCol... Nice sig.
Agreed. Devil does some great work.

Thanks for pointing that out Invictus - you're right, Gilligan's idea of karma isn't especially well conveyed in Walt's 'noble death'. And what of Skyler? And Walt Jnr? No dignity there, just tragedy. Jesse could have, and probably reasonably should have, died... but I admit to doing a mental fist pump at his final scene :)

I for one am glad that Skyler, Walt Jr and Holly were not killed off, although they were still left victims of Walts exploits.

Even though Walts eventual demise may not have been to be hung, drawn and quatered, I still felt it was a dire end. Emotionally at least.

Having been a father for the last year, I couldn't imagine having to live my life knowing that I'll never see my family again because of the horrible things that I may have done. Heck, even if I'd done nothing it would still be hell.

So when Walt see's Holly at Skylars apt, he knows that whatever happens, this is the last time that he will see her. That really got me choked a bit, you just think 'Walt, you idiot, what was it all for?'

And I think he's got that thought in his head, then he has to watch his son from afar, his son who hates him and last memory will be of his dad acting like a psycho, rather that the nice man he used to be.

Walt may not have been burnt alive, but he got his just desserts in the way that hurt him the most, he lost his family.

I really wanted to rewind it and change it when Hank went out, I was just sitting there going 'Nooooooo!!! - just beg Hank, just beg and get outta there and make your beer!!'
