Can a seller do this? (eBay question)

I understand that you might be upset that the guy shipped by UPS instead of USPS but he probably paid more and used a safer courrier.
You should cut him some slack.
Wait for the parcel to arrive and see if UPS make you pay.
Even if you do i doubt it would be that expensive...

About the fact that he has the right or not to do so well since he's upgrading the service i think it's fine with ebay.
It's usually downgrading and paying less for shipping that is a problem.

I am cutting him slack. I've already told him I will wait until I get it. Just wanted to express my displeasure here. I once received a package he size of a shoe box valued at $150 and got charged $50 for handling fees by UPS.

I agree it sucks - I guess this may be a hard lesson learned and in the future just make sure the seller is shipping USPS. If you email him to verify shipping, and they say they will ship it USPS and then don't - you may have an case with paypal/eBay...but as it is...I don't know. I suppose you could always ask eBay what they think....saying you never would have bid if you had known the seller was going to use a different carrier than the one specified in his listing. It just sucks - because either way, one of you is going to get screwed from what was probably someone just trying to insure better or quicker delivery.

This is a prime example of why I never ship outside of the 48 states.

Never had issues to Hawaii and Alaska, but I agree. It's bull____ headaches like this, the whole entitlement expectation to undervalue an item at your expense and all your risk, etc., are why I no longer sell internationally either.

On the contrary, I hate when sellers under value items and would never request a seller to do so.

Where does it say that? I've been looking and the only obligations the seller has are to describe the item accurately and ensure it arrives to the seller in a manner in which it was described in the auction as well as provide a means of tracking and proof of receipt.

Full bore drama queen there. Apples and oranges. :lol

Apples and oranges are both fruit last time I checked :lol

And I don't know that there is a specific policy regarding shipping methods; which is why a claim would probably not do anything. However you can rate a seller speficially on speed of selling and fees... so part of the transaction does relate to how it was shipped.

Again, I don't think anything would be done and it was likely a mistake. But if I were the seller I'd feel an obligation to make it right; its not cool for my mistake and oversight to cost a seller money.

For instance I found out that I was unable to mail a parcel to Brazil using Priority International; so I had to pay an extra $20 to send it Express. I should have known better when I invoiced him, but it was my mistake so I paid for it.

Could be a typo. I've made that mistake before but I email the buyer before I ship to confirm the shipping arrangements and if there is a discrepancy, the buyer will point it out. A little communication goes a long way in these types of transactions.

Yeah, I don't agree with Nam's argument here. When a person makes a decision to buy on eBay, they factor in a number of things, included in this is the shipping cost. If the buyer knows that a certain shipping company charges an extra handling fee, and does not want to buy an item shipped using it for that purpose, then that's their prerogative. Shipping method, shipping time, shipping materials, etc. aren't part of the actual item you are getting, but are factors a buyer takes into account when deciding to buy. If a seller misrepresents this, then they are in the wrong IMO. As for what eBay/Paypal would say, I have no clue, but they make arbitrary decisions all the time so that doesn't mean much to me anyway :lol

I shipped a package today--I listed UPS as the shipping method in the auction, but when I went to print the label, the eBay system would only allow me to choose USPS shipping, and there was no option to change the shipper to UPS. In the past, I have been able to select another carrier, but today the only option I was given was USPS.

I understand your concern, myself i decided to not use fedex for exemple after having some bad experiences with impatient delivery guys and their fees. So i would have been probably upset like you.

I think that if you have to pay anything to UPS you can ask him to pay half of it.
Yet again it will be a friendly gesture he has no obligation to do so.
Like i said since he upgraded you he's clear with Ebay.

And that's the reason why I frequently double check with the seller to make sure my goods are shipped USPS and not some "inexplicable fee" greedy courier.

This is reason number 8,449,375,647 that I NO LONGER ship outside the US. Too many random rules and too many scammers.

If you're paying the seller the shipping fee, how is the shipping company demanding an extra fee upon arrival ?
