Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

Just picked up the first two issues of the comic "prequel"...no spoilers here, but I'm liking the vibe they seem to be going for with this. It's been a good read so far...

After Branagh's success with "Thor", I'm hoping Johnston can pull this off...it'd be great to have two successful comic-based movies in one summer...

(from what I've seen in the trailers so far, I'm still on the fence about GL...we'll see...)

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I think the average movie goer is going to like the movie. I fear the average comic fan is going to be a bit disappointed. The hardcore fans already hate it, so I don't see it changing their mind even if it is the best comic movie in the history of mankind.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

If it can manage what I've been reading of Cap since he came back I'll be quite happy. Just the tone more than anything.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

To be completely honest, Cap was always kind of a boring character until the modern age. Many "hardcore" fans who are _____ing are just doing so just because they can, most of what I've read is just _____ing for the sake of it. The costume? Evans? The time of harping on that is long gone. I saw the Cap trailer with Thor last night and am fairly excited. If they can capture even half of what Brubaker has been doing I'll be more than happy.

My only concerns (which I've had all along) are the Nazi/Hydra cop-out, the PC distancing from any American patriotism, and the fact that Johnson hasn't made a good genre film in over 2 decades.

Evans and the costume rock.

The Nazi/Hydra copout is annoying, but I don't see it affecting the movie unless you let it.

Those two things are really kind of puzzling.

The Nazi cop out is strange considering that Nazi themselves have been fairly acceptable villains in cinema. They've been used over and over and people not only have been able to generally separate the fictional Nazis even when they use actual people character types and the actual people who existed. The only thing I can really think of is that Hydra allows them to establish the organization itself and then be able to open it up to all of their characters both used and unused immediately without having to really go any further than to point to the Cap film. I mean throughout Marvel history Nick Fury dealt with them personally, Iron Man, Captain America, The Avengers, it definitely opens that with sacrificing the Nazis abeit not completely. Either that or they are looking for Hydra to continue throughout the modern age and be the Marvel version of a major terrorist group, hitting on that theme without worrying about pissing off the Middle East.

As for the Patriotism, that one really scratches the head because the character is named "Captain America", his uniform is basically a flag not to mention the shield, considering the costuming is a variation of it but still keeping true to the root, you'd think they'd just throw their hands up but whatever.

I love the costume. It could have looked amazingly cheesy and they went for something that the X-Men for example didn't which was to cop out on the individual looks and go black leather. The New X-Men in 2001 took their look directly from the X-Men Singer film in 2000. They instead of throwing out the classic found away to make it work and beautifully so.

Evans I'm not positive or negative for. I'll allow the film determine that.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

Even if they are using this as a way to introduce Hydra, I would much prefer the beginning to focus on Nazis and then 1/3 of the way through the movie discover Hydra working with the Nazis or as a subsect within them. I really don't think it is going to effect the movie though.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

From what I've read it seems like Hydra is like the Special Ops version of the Nazis but who knows just how in-depth they'll go with that or if that is even true.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I like Cap's costime because like with Thor they went away from the spandex. You can achieve kick ass looks and something that looks like the character without having to go to the old spandex look. I'd like to have seen them use the Nazi's but I think Mike is right in that using Hyrda allows easier access to other hero's fighting them. Which in the end is smart I think.

Superhero hype:
In a pretty original promotional move, Captain America: The First Avenger offered the U.S.S. Intrepid a visit from the film's USO Girls, performing a special show for some real-world military crew.

Marvel.com has updated with photos from the event, showing the lovely ladies in all their 1940's red-white-and-blue glory.

Click on any of the images below for more over at Marvel and check back soon as video of the event is supposed to come available later in the week.

Captain America is set to hit theaters on July 22nd!

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

The more of Cap in action I see the worse this looks. Those commercials are awful, every scene Caps in looks heavily CGIed.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America Discussion Thread

I really hope this film works, but the lack of trailers and inspired footage so far makes me think that the film will be average... I hope I'm dead wrong!
