I started smoking when I was 8 years old. Actually started inhaling at about 10. I continued smoking until I was about 33. How many I smoked varied. Anything from about 1/2 pack to 2 packs a day depending on what I was doing at my maximum (partying required more cigarettes). When I got together with my wife, she was a serious cigarette hater. The more time I spent with her, the less I smoked until after about a year, I was down to a pack lasting me 4-6 weeks. When she got pregnant with my son she asked me to quit for him and threw the "You smoke so little now, why bother?" common sense at me. So in Jan of 1999, I made a New Year's resolution to quit. It is the only New Year's resolution that I have ever kept.
I have had about 5 or 6 cigarettes in the past 9 years. But I don't even count that.
For me, the key was finding something that I enjoyed doing more than smoking and that I could not do while I was smoking. And doing that all the time. Spending time with my wife was that thing.
