That was a catch on the first call. That was the right call on the punt though.
I don't think it was a catch. He was bobbling the ball around in his hands as he went out of bounds. He never dropped it, and held on when he hit the ground, but he never had stable control until the point that he was out.

The kick return actually looked to me like an Alabama guy hit the ball out of his own guy's hand, though he might have been pushed by a ND guy. In the NFL that's allowable I believe (so it wouldn't be interference) because I've seen it happen before. But I don't know the nuances of that rule in college.
 
You can't be within one yard of the player as a defender. It doesn't matter if his own player hit him. The ND guy can't be that close. It's a moot point now though the head of officiating even said it was the right call.

You also can't be blocked in either and that was also a factor.
