Thanks elvis! :1-1: I love working on the details. That's where I find all the excitement for a project. I actually find I have to struggle to focus towards the end of a project since usually by then all the neat details are done. That's whey I'm leaving the helmet and Urban HS for last so I can have something to look forward to.

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Utility Belt

The thought put into this project is crazy. All the details, the workmanship, wow. Nice work Tin :hi5:

Good thing that it's Judge Dredd, & better yet, Karl Urban Judge Dredd. So I don't feel the need to own this, since I'm not really a hardcore fan of the character. But if Judge Dredd was my thing, I might be drooling over this like the other guys in here :lol

I can simply sit back & enjoy the process, without the jealousy :lol

Thanks Lawrence :wave I'm a huge JD fan. I'm currently obsessed with the Urban movie. Way better than I expected.

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Utility Belt

Just finished fashioning Dredd's left-side shoulder pad. It is set up pretty much the way the real suit is. There is a strap going from the front vest up corner through a loop under the tip of the shoulder pad and ending on the rear vest. And on the bottom tip of the shoulder pad there is a small rubber tab that has slots for a band around the upper arm - as well as a back hook that snags onto the elastic band that the elbow pad snugs into.

The main detail sculpt pieces sit on a thin rubber sheet and a layer of the same material as the vest. Gives it a nice uniformity.

Note the placeholder head from an old Dragon figure (I think). It is slight larger than the final Urban HS I will sculpt. I'm using it to build Dredd's helmet around to assure enough clearance.

Some more shots of the shoulder pad. With the addition of the shoulder pad - the arm balances out quite well.

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Left Shoulder Pad

The beginnings of Dredd's helmet. Apparently - the helmets in the movie were pretty snug fitting. So deciding to make a removable helmet is a risk. I want my buyers to be able to pose Dredd in just the moto jacket and pants - with the helmet off.

But you never see (any) Dredd without helmet, so why display him without it?;)

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Left Shoulder Pad

Ever since I made the Kane figure and posted figures of him posed holding his helmet - all my clients have requested the same for other characters.

There's a scene in the very beginning where we get a glimpse of Dredd putting on his helmet. That will be a cool display pose in my opinion.

Just got the basic shape of Dredd's helmet down.

@tinister

It looks good. Your helmet surface is smooth, rounded and thin. Do you mind telling us how you sculpt it? And what material did you use? Thanks.

Thanks aye_captain! :1-1:

I use a two-compound clay called "Magic-Sculpt". You can get it online or at Taps Plastics stores. I think some Michael's craft stores might have it too.

I like it because before it cures or hardens - it has a stable clay texture for sculpting detail, but you can also you a brush and water to smoothen the surface before it cures. Or you can use an X-acto blade after it cures to scrape the surface to be smooth - which is what I did here for the helmet. I will also use steel wool on the final product to get it even more sheen.

As for the thickness of the helmet; the initial sculpt is pretty chunky. Then once it cures - I use various sculpting tools to refine the shape down to the desire thickness. It's a little tricky but it's a good skill to get used to. You also have to sculpt the basic form with sturdy merging points or else when you thin it down - the parts may fall apart on you.

Hope that helps. Tin

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Left Shoulder Pad

As an example to what I mentioned above. This is the helmet with some of the relief details added. Note that the relief detail is thick and not smooth. I basically added new Magic-Sculpt clay to the helmet and used an X-acto blade to cut out the shape of the relief details.

Once the relief details cure - I'll take a small file and file them down to the desired thickness and smoothness. I'll post pics of that tomorrow.

So awesome. This thread is full of magic.

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Left Shoulder Pad

Amazing... I've worked with these materials, but can't fathom getting something as smooth or symmetrical as that helmet :lol
