Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Gauntlets.

One of the coolest details on Dredd is the strap that tightens around the wrist to hold the gauntlets tight around the brim of the gloves. I originally planned to sculpt this detail into the gloves when I got to them, but then that meant doing it for each glove.

So out of laziness - I decided to make the straps an attachment to the gauntlets (just like the real thing). The straps are attached to two loops that are extended from the bottom of the gauntlets. The loops hold the strap in place around the brim of the glove. I made the strap loop just big enough so that I can easily fit the gloves through and into the wrist sockets. Looks pretty good.

Here are some pics:

Man... I envy you for such amazing talent. But thanks for sharing us your work. I could use your photos as detailed reference for my project :)

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Gauntlets.

:panic: Oh man. I made a really important realization tonight that saved me from making a huge mistake. :panic:

So I finally started working on Dredd's motorcycle pants and I got to thinking that it must have been really uncomfortable for Urban in the suit because he's got three things fighting for the same space:

1) The bottom edges of the tactical vest meets up with the very top of the pants - which has the belt and all the accessories hanging on it.
2) The bottom of the moto jacket sits over the pants - which means it's supposed to fit over the belt too. That seems impossible.

So I was playing around with it for almost two hours trying to make it work and wasn't getting anywhere. The only way was to tuck the jacket into the pants. But then the top of the pants and belt would fight with the bottom of the vest! :gah:

Then I looked at all the reference pictures I collected and realized; Those clever costume designers! :slap

THE BELT LOOPS AREN'T ATTACHED TO THE PANTS. THEY'RE ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE TACTICAL VEST!!!!!:yess:

That way the vest and belt don't fight each other for space. And it also allows the belt to hang higher up on the waist without Dredd looking like he's wearing grandpa pants.

I came that close to putting the loops onto the pants :lol

Here are some pics of the belt suspended (temporarily) from the vest. I will reinforce the loops when I get a chance. And now that I figured this structure out - it explains why there are two little button snaps on the back of the belt. Those are the bottom of the back of the vest wrapped underneath and up to snap the belt on the back in place. I will reproduce this on my Dredd.

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Belt Rigging: DISASTER AVOIDED!!

I love, when someone thinking, how that can work in real life and make it like that, not only to look good, but must it be working! You really doing great job! :clap :clap

Thanks Elar!

What an addictive thread. Great work Tinister!

Are you placing 3 loops on the back of the vest? I know some of the judges just had the double rear loops, don't know if that was intentional or battle damage from filming.

Thaks Niltusk! :)

Right now - I have my Dredd with 4 loops up front (two groups of 2). And two separated loops on the back. But the picture below is what I probably will end up having.

You only see one in the pic - but there are actually two - one on each side. They're basically large extension flaps of the back of the tactical vest that reach down and around the belt and then snap onto the belt itself.
My friend was suggesting that it is actually the handcuff bundle - but you can see the handcuff strap right next to it (with the two vertical buttons).

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Law Giver & Holste

Some pics of my Dredd's painted up final belt. I decided to have the clasp for the belt located at the back since I want the buckle in the front to be nice and flush with the body. The clasp in the back is covered up by a little sleeve that slides over it. Then the entire sleeve will be hidden in the wrap-around extension of the back of the vest. I also have a wired armature for the belt so that it can be bent into place.

I also made a separate belt attachment for the two magazine holsters on the right side. Basically - a second layer of belt strap that the two holsters hang from. The holsters sit loosely when the entire belt is unlatched, but when the belt is latched - the strap that the two holsters hang on become super tight around the holster attachments. This forces the holsters to sit in alignment with each other like in the movie. Without this - they kind of hang limp on the side of the belt like loose teeth. I could just glue everything onto the belt like a lot of people do - but that really changes the way the belt looks - it doesn't hang realistically.

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Utility Belt

In the making of Dredd's tactical vest - it got pretty scuzzy in my hands so I took the airbrush to the front of it to blend all the various components together. Looks so much better now. Here are some pics along with the newly painted belt. Also note that I made a new improved handcuff bundle. For this version - I took a hammer and pounded the black wiring used as the cuff cord so that it is flat rather than rounded. This then allowed me to more easily bend the wiring into the same folding configuration of the real cuffs. Looks a lot better.

Note that the gold colored clasps seen holding the vest together along the sides are placeholders. I'm making custom faces that will fit over them to look like the ones in the movie.

Finished sculpting the elbow pads last night. These are just the main detail. There's a rim portion that will be rubber so it can bend with teh arm. And a collar that goes around the arm. The rubber portion has "tongues" at the top and bottom to tuck into the flaps on the arm of the jacket.

The beginnings of Dredd's pocket knife. It will be attached to the utility belt between the Med Kit and the Smoke Grenade.

Re: UPDATED WIP Custom Dredd 3D Judge Dredd Figure - Final Painted Utility Belt

Ever since the Nostromo Kane project - I always make it a habit to reinforce all the joints on the base body before I put on any clothing that will be a pain to remove once on - like Dredd's motor cycle outfit. So glad I did. Strong tight joints help with poseability with tight-fitting outfits.
