Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

hopefully i'll see this soon, I already know what i'm walking into anyways. My gut tells me a few great scenes might save it for me.

I now know that the trailers for this movie where massively misleading but they still remain my two favorite trailers of the year.

I recommend seeing it in 3D, there were some cool effects that were enhanced by the conversion. I also saw it in IMAX though none of the footage was filmed with IMAX cameras so the aspect ratio never changes (which will be one less thing for me to complain about with the blu-ray at least since we're guaranteed to get the true theatrical ratio at home for this one.)

I really don't know how you'll take it.

For me it's another Batman Returns, a movie that absolutely will not be for everyone, and one that even though I thoroughly enjoyed there are still a number of things that bothered me, are just plain goofy, etc. But Returns has Catwoman and Shreck and Batman cruising through the town in the snow at night and Penguin driving that stupid little batcar and other cool/hilarious moments and SS has Harley and Deadshot and Katana and Waller and some great Joker/general mayhem sequences and great chemistry between the principal cast.

Well everyone can put away all the bts drama on the Ayer version vs Studio version and RT % because the only thing that matters to WB is money and the movie broke all kinds of records already.

As far as WB is concerned their vision is alive and well.

Ayer much smarter and more savvy than Josh Trank that's for sure.

Well, there is the FU Marvel part. :slap :lol

You know what, with this explanation I'm not even shocked anymore. This makes sense, because I think Batman Returns has one of the worst scripts of all time for a superhero movie, but the movie is sort of oozing with style. Suicide Squad is extremely similar, it's still a lot worse in my opinion but looking at it that way I can see why you enjoyed it.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Spoiler free review/thoughts:

Was able to see it yesterday. Since I was following all the hype/reviews I pretty much zeroed my expectations for it and went to be entertained. Overall I actually liked it. I'd give it a solid 7.5/10 near 8. Yes it does have some pacing issues and the editing job was probably the worst thing about it. Would have liked to see some more character development with Boomerang and Katana but oh well. It is a shame many of the Joker's scenes were cut, but I thought Leto was decent as the Joker. Robbie of course stole the show as I figured she would.

I thought the first 20-30 mins of the movie was the most disjunct of the entire thing. Granted I know that's when they're introducing the characters but that whole process didn't seem to flow well, and is my biggest gripe point with it. Enchantress headdress was silly and she seemed to 'twitch' too much (not that I minded seeing Cara twitch! I read some MSN review in which it says that Ayer says the blu ray will have 10 mins of extra footage....really? That's it? I really hope they do a 'ultimate' cut of this because it would be a shame not to. It was EONS better than BvS and MOS. WW has some hope now. I still don't have much desire to see Flash, Aquaman or the Justice Leage movie, but SS really isn't as bad as 90% of the reviews seem to paint it. If you're out for comic book based entertainment, this hits the mark.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I thought it was decent.

There's some issues present for sure, namely the editing (especially in the first act) and the use of CGI, but overall as an experience I enjoyed it and wasn't bored. That's pretty much all I look for in film of this genre. I'm not expecting to be moved, or leave pondering my own life choices, I want to leave the cinema going "Well, those __ hours were fun, I'm glad I saw it", and I am glad that I saw it.

Sure they could've made better use of some characters, or maybe not included some entirely, but I found myself really liking Deadshot and El Diablo a lot more than I expected.

I honestly do feel that a lot of the negativity for this, as well as BvS, comes from people expecting a Marvel film with DC characters, when in reality a lot of DC characters wouldn't fit in a Marvel type universe. I know it's the previous iteration, but would a Nolan-style world (essentially a crime drama with a hero) fit for any Marvel characters, besides Iron Man? The DC universe isn't the same aesthetic as Marvel, and shouldn't really be compared in my opinion.

Also, this might just be me, but it seems that in recent years, with sites like RT getting more and more popular, the "sheeping" in regards to a film's reaction has increased massively. When a film is getting negatives reviews, more people almost blindly agree or go to see the film with all the negatives in mind and look out for them. So many audience reviews tend to start with something along the lines of "I had to see if SS was as bad as critics say. It was". To me, that's not going in with an open mind, so of course you'll agree and think it's bad. Then there's the huge crowd of people afraid to go against the norm.

It also doesn't help that while Marvel has Marvel Studios, DC has to go through WB Studios, who are clearly after money more so than intricate world-building. Personally, I'd have followed MoS with MoS 2, then a Batman movie, and then BvS to better establish some of the characters that we've just been introduced to in Suicide Squad.

I'd give the film 6.5 out of 10. Maybe just about a 7. It was an above average, overly edited film with some great characters and action sequences. I'd see it again.

Nah, his post actually opened my eyes why he was able to get something out of this movie. I personally think its top 2 worst superhero movies I’ve ever seen, but comparing it to something like Batman Returns and seeing how it compares to that movie I can see now how someone would enjoy this. Still though, Batman Returns might have one of the worst scripts of a superhero movie but it made up for it in style and atmosphere, to me this movie had some of that but once they left Arkham so did all of the personality.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Just saw it. I was very excited to finally see the movie, mostly to see the Joker even though I know he was mostly a secondary character.

Felt a bit disappointed. The CG is not that good, the character depictions from the main cast ,aside from Harley and Deadshot, are underwhelming.

The Joker did not have enough screen time to really judge him.

The plot could have been better.

In short, maybe a 6/10

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

So SS did break August records, as expected. It's estimated it'll pull in $135.1 million, beating previous record holder Guardians of the Galaxy. But still didn't meet or exceed original predictions of $142-$150 mil. The big test will be next weekend's drop off and whether or not all the negative reviews hurt it. A lot of the revenue was from pre-ticket sales before the reviews started to hit the internet. Plus no China release is damaging to the overall gross as well. It's total is $267mil worldwide with $132mil overseas.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Alright. Geez... lol

I've read plenty of reviews from the critics, several from comic book fans and the general audience. I honestly mean no disrespect to those who genuinely enjoyed the film but gosh darn it my question is HOW?. (Even though I respect your opinion. Obviously things like this are subjective so~) The movie had no real story, it is indeed choppy as hell regarding the editing and to be honest, I was not impressed with any of the performances. I was overall bored watching this movie and it felt like a real chore to get through.

Amazingly enough, I wanted more of Leto's Joker simply for the LOLZ. He and Harley made it entertaining and I certainly don't mean that as a compliment. Hell, "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin" are more entertaining, and I mean that as a "I just feel like watching a bunch of celebrities making fools of themselves" kind of way. This movie is just an atrocity and should not be considered a true Batman film. I can't even see how the actors themselves can defend this, especially if they watched the final product. Good Grace... :slap

Since it's been discussed throughout this forum I think it's safe to mention Ben Affleck's Batman, which I felt was completely unnecessary. His scene with Deadshot and his daughter was incredibly silly. Geez, this movie makes TDKR seem like a master piece and I HAAAATED that film. :lol

I rate this film 04/10.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

It does seem like a few people who had gotten tired of the Nolan films have been pretty much saying 'sorry Nolan, will you take us back' after this run of DC films.
