Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Sorry Pturtle,
While i have not watched the movie yet, I dont think I can give my full opinion once I do since this thread is becoming "positive opinions only" :grouphug :lol
besides my BvS opinions got me into ugly arguments that I don't think I have the energy for in here. this thread is a little more fun and light hearted than BvS was.

So while judging from the clips I Do think i will hate this, I am afraid to say i dont think I will be posting my full review ever lol

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Superman 3 and 4 villains.

And of course

They're easy to forget.

Nuclear Man was boss. The moon fight is the best cinematic brawl ever put on screen.

Hot Toys really ****ed up not making a figure of him.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Most disappointing of all time might be Schumacher Bane for me. I was so pumped after Knightfall to see him on screen and then..."bomb...bomb...." :slap

Also the Italian Skull in the 1990 Craptain America movie.

DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I guess it's unfair to add Letoker to my worst villains list since he isn't even really a villain in this movie, but he certainly makes my top 5 worst performances in a superhero movie.

This "you don't want no beef" scene is just way too cringeworthy.

You want to see a better version of that scene, watch Gary Oldman in True Romance :D

The trailer did a good job of hiding how awful Bane was. I remember seeing him lift and destroy the Batsignal and was like "oh man, that's awesome, what a great idea". What a bummer.

I haven't watched True Romance in years, totally forgot Oldman was even in it. He probably would have made a great Joker, I can even see him playing an older TDKR Joker now.

Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe, Michael Keaton, Crispin Glover, Johnny Depp, Robin Williams, and David Bowie could have made good Jokers.

I like it. Christopher Walken would've made a good Dark Knight Returns Joker, along with Bowie.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Saw it again tonight. Some spoiler stuff in my ramblings below...

I do like it...but the one this that kept nagging on me is...I hope there is another cut of this movie we get to see at some point. I'd like to see if Ayers truly did put together something here that stayed in the same tone the movie opened with...that John Carpenter-esque vibe that was kind of fun. As it is, the movie has such odd shifts you can almost see where other hands got into the editing and just turned into something that flails around and never finds it's footing again.

The cast is fine...Ayer's style fits into the same composition style and flair Snyder has established with the first two DC-Universe films. Where the thing derails is the story. The Enchantress is not a compelling antagonist here...the lead characters are all too "soft" to be the super-villians promised in the whole premise. This whole "the world is in danger from more CGI swirling crap with an endless de-humanized body count" had zero drama or impact. Coming up with something more directly focused on the new team and less"global" would have helped distinguish it from the endless parade of apocalyptic mayhem this genre seems stuck in (from every studio).

While I can buy Smith's (Deadshot) motivation and character arc here (even though it's really conventional-typical leading man stuff), it's Harley (and by extension, the Joker) who come off badly here. Harley goes through the movie and ends up "changed" by the experience of being part of a group...that is all undone with her final scenes of being rescued by the Joker. She's now just another woman waiting to be rescued by her man...and she is...and it calls into question why her character was even involved with this operation...no meta-powers here, just a mad chick waiting for her man. ugh.

Which leads to the Joker. Leto was trying in vain to bring something to the character...but all of his scenes (and many of Harley's) seemed like they belonged in a different movie. I never really compared him to the previous versions of the character so vividly brought to life by Romero, Nicholson and Ledger...the "world" this version is inhabiting is so strikingly different. But it's how the character is presented through the story here that just seems to sell it short. Just a flamboyant gangster who's chasing after his woman. He's in this finished film so little too, especially when considering all the pre-release hype surrounding Leto and the character. A lot a posing and shooting things, but no real "scene" or line that gives this version a unique stamp. I never thought of the Joker as just a lovesick guy out to show his lady what a bad boy he is. Don't think this can be blamed on Leto...it's more down to the editing here.

Like I said up top...I hope there is an "ultimate"version of this movie we get to see at some point. I really like the BvS one...but hey, I really like that movie, period. The Ultimate verison jsut doesa good job filling in a lot of the blanks from the theatrical version. Hope Suicide Squad gets that chance too.
