Watchmen proved that WB/DC certainly isn't afraid of the R rating.

Watchmen is a totally different beast than other DC stuff, though. 95% of the audience likely had no idea that was based on a comic made by the same publishing company responsible for Batman and Superman. Hard to avoid that connection with this movie, with Joker involved and Batman cameo'ing.

I think Man of Steel already fits this bill. But to take the approach that they have to be even darker and more "mature" than that for subsequent movies is kind of frightening to think about
