It's not recasting if it is just a part and it is not the same as the original IMO. Like a custom head is not recasting.

That base is actually a full recast. The base was recast and made with clear resin with only the "S" added to it. There wasn't even an attempt to alter the crystal structure to make it less obvious what was done. This is NOT the same thing as making a custom head. A custom head that is made properly is an ENTIRELY new sculpt with only the key or neck that might need to be cast. The only other above board way to make a custom head would be a one of a kind like the ones that Vince Veil does when he alters a stalk head and he doesn't cast it at all. In the end this base is a recast and the guy who made it has been running around on the facebook pages, and he has been banned from quite a few. He is also charging $400 for this, and I gotta say that is robbery... I know a guy who could do this with a light up feature for only $150 or so. However, he wouldn't because he has more integrity.

I like it though.

The problem is if you let people start this stuff it roles down hill fast. Now I am not sayin it isn't a cool idea, but grab some clay build some additional crystal structures on the base and alter its appearance entirely so you have the key and the balance, but something totally original when casted in clear resin. That way, while yeah you used the original as a base, you have something that took SOME effort and thought.

$400 is way too high. I don't mind they made it the same shape as the original, it is different enough and won't affect SS sales except help them for those that want to "upgrade". I fail to see the problem, this is not a complete statue "recast" that would take away from the original manufacturer. This is similar to that fabric custom cape and that takes less effort than the base to make, yet I heard nobody crying foul over that.

Recasting is still recasting

Again, someone had to make the capes. they measured to make sure they'd fit, they sewed the capes individually, not to mention the original PF came with a completely different cape. What your talking about is literally taking the base from the PF, dropping some molding silicone over it and then filling that mold with clear resin. That's it.

Which = recasting

It is the same shape as the original base. It IS the original base just in clear resin with an added "S" which is the only new thing. In principle this is no different then throwing the OG Spiderman Comiquette into some silicone and making copies. Sure some would say it is, but it isn't.

I actually think you are confusing the term "custom" and "recast". When I started to do my custom Batgirl I could have easily just recast the original head, sanded off the mask lines, cut off the ears, and then sculpt new hair and a cowl. It would have taken me a weeks at the most, and it would have looked fine and it would have been easier. However, if I had I would have been a recaster, and I am pretty sure that I wouldn't be here still as I would have been booted. Like I said before there is a good damn reason Vince Veill doesn't cast his customs he would have been under the gun from the entire community.

Instead I spent months learning how to sculpt flowing hair, and working on the craft. So I could get this

which lead to this

There is a HUGE difference between the two, and there is a reason why guys who produce customs on a larger scale don't use any part of the original sculpt other then the key. They know the difference between recasting and CREATING something new. That includes Dan's custom fabric capes. They weren't copies of the original they were an entirely new thing.

You can't equate what this guy did with a recast base to a properly done custom.
