We really have our expectations too high for this show. If you consider that the last episode of Season 4 should've been the series finale, then you can just watch the other seasons like they're fan fiction or something.
I mean, the ending for Season 4 was so epic that it will not be topped.
Again, this season proves that Dexter continues to lose his edge. He makes too many rookie mistakes and his judgement sucks now. I think giving Dexter a kid so early in the series as well as killing Rita off so early in the series painted them into a corner.
I'd can believe that Dexter would began to truly have his first real signs of "feelings" for Debra and even Rita because there was so much foundation laid for it. It was a progression, it made sense, it was symbolic (Deb on the ITK's table and Rita in the bloodbath) but I just can't see Dexter being so quick to fall for Hannah nor can I see him trusting Vogel so fast. Consider earlier in the series when Dexter began to ponder whether Harry did the right thing, like maybe Dexter could've had a chance at a more normal life. The symbolism is there with Vogel, regardless of who the killer is, she is the Brain Surgeon at least metaphorically because she essentially programs a killer. I don't think it made much sense for Dexter to be so quick to trust her or Hannah given his past dealings.
like I said, Debra and Rita made sense to me because they very much filled the roles of the vicitims. They suffered for being close to Dexter. Now, I guess the pitch is that Dexter deserves to be with somebody like him.....
Better writing would help alot.
