Im watching 'The Impossible Planet' i think its well written and an overall epic feel, i think near the end of RTD run as was stated very well by Pixeltwin is he had gone big and then struggled to find ways to outdo himself which i think led to the frankly messy fourth series + climax which as 'epic' as it should of been failed to hit the mark because the story was all over the place trying to tie in several different story arcs (Rose, Mickey,Donna, meta crisis, dalek Khan, Davros, Martha, Sarah Jane). Stephen Moffet is currently on his first run as Chief and he has to pick up where RTD left off and to RTD's credit he pretty much covered every huge story he could think off bringing back the biggest Who baddies and going bigger than before, Moffet now has the unenviable task of winning fans with a new doctor and restablishing the Who-universe as he see's it, while trying to reinvent stories that have been done before. The budget may be smaller but Moffet is winning fans back by simply writting simpler and smarter. Epic is great but when its called for, not every episode needs to be extravigant and OTT when simple fun storys set in a tiny village such as Amys Choice can get people talking about how good Who is.
