So one the one hand you don't think the new design team can be trusted just because they freshened up the tired old Dalek design and made a TARDIS interior you didn't like, yet on the other you are being critical of people who want more of an old school approach? :slap
So on the one hand you call a Dalek design tired and old becuase it is about 5 years old, yet you want to go back to design elements in the cybermen from decades ago?

There is a huge difference between "old school" and things that were still being used last year.

As much as I wish the revived series was a complete reboot and nothing to do with the series that ran from 1963-89 it is supposed to be the SAME continuity so some consistency should be expected.
Fine, but production values sometimes dictate continuity. Back then the production values were low and people were ok with it, hence a bunch of wobbly sets and cybermen that looked like they were put together from spare things that the producers had in thier garage.

Today you just can't get away with production values that low and expected to be taken seriously. So even if they are redesinged, expect them to be updated. Guys in silver jumpsuits are a thing of the past.

Obviously things should look a lot slicker nowadays but there's nothing wrong with the designs of many Classic villains that a bit of modern polish wouldn't solve. There's no need for complete redesigns every single time.
Fair enough. But unfortunatly the classic cybermen are one of those things that just isnt going to cut it anymore.

But we are in agreement that not everything has to be updated all the time. Hence my problem with the new Daleks. They felt that they needed to update them just becuase this was "a new era" or something
and they ended up with something hideous.

I really enjoyed "The Lodger", but like most US people here, I have no idea who the ____ this James Corden guy is. It was like a fun "lite" episode but we still got to have The Doctor.

Looks like the ____ hits the fan next week! :rock

It makes sense that the second floor had a perception filter, considering it's a TARDIS...or at least a copy of a TARDIS...the Doctor's TARDIS has one too...

Now the Torchwood lift having one simply because the TARDIS landed there...now THAT's stupid...

Say, who did the upstairs TARDIS belong to anyway???

It was a crashed ship and the auto pilot was trying to find suitable replacements to fly the thing, it was mentioned right when they entered the room that it looked like someone was trying to build a tardis but after that sentence it was revealed as just a crashed ship of some sort and the fact it was like the tardis wasnt mentioned again which was disapointing, outside of the original pilots being dead no one mentioned who they actually were. The doctor mentioned that humans were too weak to fly the thing and timelords are too powerfull so that killed my hope it was some big baddie like the Rani or the Master returning!

I really don't get the hate for this last episode (or for James Corden - always found him to be a likeable and funny fella)

But in terms of the episode, I found it funny and sweet in just the perfect amount.

Seeing the doctor trying to fit in and be 'normal' was hilarious... really made you remember that he's an alien and not human, it was written and performed brilliantly.

And the headbutt data transfer was quite possibly the greatest piece of writing i've ever seen. They needed to get across pages and pages of dialogue for the doctor to explain who he is, what he is, where he's from, what he does..... and THEN they need to have him explain why he's there, what's happened, what's going on upstairs, and what help he needs...... (all of which would kill the pacing of the episode dead.)

....and they find a way to do that that is not only INSTANT..... but also funny as hell, we were rolling around laughing with that scene :lol

I loved the episode, and as a lighter, slightly more comical break from any heavy stories I thought it worked perfectly. (oh, and James Corden did a perfectly fine job as a guest actor... seriously, if there's someone you hate THAT much... then don't watch the effing episode. sheesh) :rolleyes2

I wanted to give it a chance, i felt the same way about Cathrine Tate but i geuninly thought she was brilliant in series 4 so it was only fair i did the same for him. it wasnt just James Corden that ruined the whole episode i think it was overall just a poor episode, the only part i found funny about the headbutt was him screaming shut up when Corden was motormouthing the plans. The headbutt just seemed a little too silly for me its like "il headbutt you and you'll suddenly get all this alien information, be ok with it and totally understand everything im doing and why im doing it" i just didnt buy it, however its just my opinion and ive _____ed and moaned a bit too much on one episode so im moving on to next weeks finalle beginning which looks to be really hectic and pretty much fantastic!

Fair play to you for that, but if I don't like somebody in one thing it's highly unlikely I'll like them in anything else.

I wish I could get back the time I wasted watching "The Shouting Bride" and series 4 so I wasn't going to make the same mistake watching an untalented sack of crap like Corden.

I've noticed for bringing back the older villains, it's always their dialogue, not their design that makes them suck...except the Sontarans...everyone knows that armour should be grey or black...

The Daleks in RTD's series looked awesome...except the gold...but then they go all sentimental...

As bcm said already, giving the Cybermen a catchphrase just doesn't work...

And the Master's dialogue again made him a tragic hero instead of an insane madman...

The Daleks only emotion should be "Exterminate!". Period.

Anything like sentimentality would affect their ability to be effective killing machines and such emotions were stripped from their genetic code......Davros refers to this in "Genesis of the Daleks" but I don't suppose RTD ever watched that.

I think the Cybermen got off lightly, lhe poor Sontarans got a catchphrase AND a silly little dance that made them look like extremist Oompa Loompas.

The mistake with the Master was hiring someone who looks about as threatening as a kids TV show host to play him and it was all downhill from there.

I actually liked John Simm as the master, like you said he was kind of the sympathetic mad man, the tragic anti-hero of sorts, but prior to John Simm as the master i hadnt seen the character before so it was easier for me to like him in the role, same as why i think Tennant is my fave Doctor because he was the first one i bought into. Giving the enemies catchphrases kind of cheapens the threat a bit i agree, with the Daleks its something thats always been there and its accosiated with them, but the Cybermen need to be a tad more menacing rathe rthan borg rip-offs or stormtrooper style canon fodder, Cybermen are always easily defeated nowadays.

Fair enough if you'd not seen any other incarnation of the character but after Roger Delgado & Anthony Ainley, the decidedly wimpy looking Simm just didn't cut it for me though in many ways it's fitting that the crappiest Doctor got to go up against a crappy Master.

Even the decaying Master with the ping pong ball eyes from "The Deady Assassin" and "The Keeper of Traken" was more convincing.

I think the Nu-Who bad guys in general need to be made more of a threat because it's very rare that any of them allow me to suspend my disbelief and think the Doctor isn't gonna make it............the magic switch ( or should that be screwdriver? ) is usually right round the corner.

But because of how today's media is, we all know the Doctor is in no threat. Same for the main companion. Contracts and such are announced so far ahead and for so long that we know if there is going to be any major shift in the cast.

It's a very different experience watching the show as an American. Most of us didn't know who James Corden or Catherine Tate were (and before that Billie Piper or even Kylie Minogue). So we first see these people in their roles, without any preconceptions or baggage. And on that score I have to say that Corden was just fine this week. I liked him, he fit the role, I would have had no idea it was stunt casting without the Internet. This applies even more to Tate, who was frankly brilliant in series four.

:goodpost::exactly:

i think its a british tradition, we find someone to be the next star and ram them down the publics throat untill people are sick of them, Cathrine Tate had her own sketch show which became a monster with her catchphrases on every single piece of merchandise available from mugs to keyrings, Little Britain is the same was once funny but was rammed down the publics throat in the same manner with everybody spouting of dumb little quotes. James Corden currently is everywhere in the English media from TV shows to that awful flick that was saved by hot lesbians, a current top UK hit with Dizzee Rascal, award shows and in bloody Doctor Who the guy is everywhere!

I'm hoping for either a badass villain to return/created maybe Omega? or that there is an epic battle between the races lik ea better version of the 'Doomsday' battle.

Exactly why I ended up hating Tennant.

One clip of her alleged "comedy" show was all I needed to form a negative opinion of Tate, and her Who debut really sealed it. She looks horrible and sounds even worse.

Corden always comes across as an arrogant prick who thinks he's God's gift to entertainment just because he's fat and I have never laughed at anything I've seen him in. Many people on other Who forums seem to wish the Doctor's headbutt was legit and I tend to agree with them.

Little Britain's sole redeeming quality was Tom Baker.

I don't really want to see any more old characters return because there's little chance of them being done proper justice.

The Sontarans and Silurians were both terrible so I really don't want to see Ice Warriors or Zygons become the latest to fall victim to the modern trend of redesigning everything just for the sake of it.

exactly... :goodpost: and it's a shame people from this country (and others) aren't able to look past 'their' own problems with particular actors, and I'm not just talking about on this forum or on doctor who. You see it all the time online - "I hate xxxx so I hated this episode"

...what should that have to do with anything? If it's good... it's good. surely?

I have no idea what the hell you've been watching to form that opinion. Anytime I've seen him on chat shows, interviews or behind the scenes stuff he always comes across as someone who's very humble and to put it simply... can't believe his luck at the success he's had. He comes across as very greatful if anything.

An arrogant prick who thinks he's gods gift to entertainment?

:dunno
