Its not like the Daleks were threatening while Tom Baker was the Doctor. I mean, he defeats them with a coat thrown over their eye or by pushing the Dalek leader around like a defenseless cripple in a wheelchair.

No one was threatening while Tom Baker was the Doctor.

BLASPHEMERS!!!!!

:mad::mad::mad:

Deadly Assassin scared the crap outta me... so did a few others that I can't remember.

:lol

I love Tom as much as the next guy, and he fought some damn cool baddies, but when he's offering them jellybabies and tossing a string of one-liners at them, it's tought to see them as a real threat. Deadly Assassin was a good one though. It actually made the Master dangerous again after one too many defeats at the hands of Pertwee.

The Daleks definitely need a break. They've become what the Borg became on Star Trek. Originally, they felt like a truly unstoppable threat, but they were eventually overused (thanks Voyager )to the point that they were nothing more than a gimmick to pull in ratings. The Daleks are like Freddy Krueger. We no longer watch them because they're scary, but because we have become comfortable with them. I mean, we had the Doctor holding them at bay with a cookie for Christ's sake.

I didn't mind the cookie bit, what really got me was the Dalek that was quaking in fear of River Song, I know she's pretty repulsive but it should have exterminated her without a second thought.

The Daleks that Terry Nation created would have done so but like many other things from the Classic era they've been twisted into sad caricatures of their former selves for no real reason other than to be "different".

My local city was invaded by some Who aliens today as part of the promotion for the Doctor Who Live tour.

Nottingham's Old Market Square is currently covered with sand and made to look like a beach and tonight's local news had some footage of a Cyberman stomping around scaring the crap out of any kids in the vicinity assisted by a Clockwork Man, a Scarecrow and one of those generic lizard creatures from the last series.

There was also a bloke from the Trent FM Arena waffling about the show which will apparently feature a flying Dalek onstage and Nigel Planer ( Neil in "The Young Ones" no less ) who will play a circus ringmaster type character presenting his exhibition of all things related to the Doctor.

Roll on October 26th!:)

The Daleks from Eccleston's season, now those were some bad mofos. They couldn't even stop the one in "Dalek," it had to commit suicide, and it basically took Rose becoming God to stop the Emperor. They set the bar pretty high there, and the subsequent portrayals haven't even come close to making them feel as menacing.

I was fine with them until the last 5 minutes of "Parting of the Ways" when they became fodder for RTD's plan to make Rose Tyler the most important character in the show's history.

Incidentally the ending of "Dalek" ( the "last" one killing itself ) was rehashed from a story from 17 years earlier.

I don't lke the Daleks being able to fly like planes...I don't mind them being able to hover a few feet off the ground, but when they start flying around like a jet or even through space...it makes me sigh...

I don't even mind Dalek Sec being able to fly up...he is a command Dalek after all...

Have the Daleks been a direct cause of the Doctors regeneration? i mean shot or otherwise rather than the 'Parting of Ways' naff radiation (which i always enjoyed when RTD said he knew how David Tennants Doc would die because it was practically the same way the last doctor did). I would of been happy if Tennant would of died as a result of the Dalek shot he took in the 'Stolen Earth'. Failing that i think 11 and Amy should come in contact with the daleks again, get cornered and the Dalek just mid-way through 11's predictable motivational ramble blows Amys head clean off her shoulders, no one would expect that!

Tom Baker was unequivocally the best Doctor. His witty humor helped to lighten the dramatic tension. Just the expression on his face alone when reacting to the silly rubber-suited monsters was priceless. Nobody embodied the Doctor better than him.

:gah:

I can't see it. And neither can my wife who is also 33 but completely seperated for some reason from everything 80s. While I am obsessed with the 80s (and 70s). So we have 2 very diff views.

Tom Baker hit something with the times, maybe you enjoy a personal nostalgia. Maybe the 80s scifi vacuum was set or something that people gravitated to him. As a kiddo in the 80s i certainly remember him more than anyone else, PBS reruns I think. but I wasnt glued to the set back then for Who. So watching them now is almost a revalation.

Anyway, we've been watching the episodes as close to chronoligical order as possible and thus far both my wife and I undoubtedly think he's the worst of the first 4 doctors. unfortunately not much available of the 2nd doctor.

but we are both INCREDIBLY BORED with Tom Baker. He's a fool and a sht actor. His version of the Doctor is completely stupid.

Technically Tom was more 70's than 80's. :lol But us Americans didn't get to see him until the 80's in syndication. I think that's probably why most of us on the other side of the pond have a fondness for Tom Baker because he was our first Doctor but the guy just had such a charismatic personality and chemistry. Tom is a hilarious guy.

He;s funny. And cliche in that 70s and 80s way. but his acting and portrail of the character is complete shttt. the way he pretends to not hear his companion to the way he can't physically act better than a downsyndrome 12 year old is an insult to high school stage acting.

Well you obviously didn't get his schtick because that was all intentionally part of his portrayal of the Doctor. :lol

Well acting like a literal retard made him a star! :clap Good on him. Our generation loves him for it. I for one am glad it ended before I got old enough to really understand what was crap. Otherwise I'd be forever corrupted against Dr. Who based on his acting alone.

i don't mind. its not like tennant is my hero any more than the actor that played syler on heroes is.

he's an actor not an icon like tom baker has been made out to be.

uh. thus far i don't know. i actually kinda dig the old man in a certain way. like i said wish the 2nd doc had more on the dvd so i can see.

i enjoyed the dandy 3rd doc too.

the 4th is ok in an occassional watch, but like i said i been watching in chronological order on netflix, so i've seen like 10 disc of his stuff in a row and omg its frikken dull and im tired of him.

only seen a handful of the others.

of the new, yes i like tennant the best of the 3 (ecc too emo, not sure on the kid) but i'm not a tennant worshipper either.

just trying my best to enjoy it all.
