The next series of Doctor Who will air in two parts, it has been announced.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival this morning, showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed that the sixth run will start in Spring 2011 and return in the Autumn.

A statement from the BBC explained: "The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens."

They are really setting themselves up for a big failure with that released statement.

I don't think I will be "on the edge of my seat" all summer. More likely, I will end up being annoyed by a super short "season" of Doctor Who, then buy a ridiculously overpriced box set, forget all about Doctor Who until Torchwood starts up again in summer, then another super-short "season" of Who starts up again in Fall followed by another ridiculously overpriced box set. :monkey2

:pfft: Moffat

It doesn't really matter though. I'll take it and I'll like it, just like the rest of you. :lol

The show's scheduling was constantly messed with in the 80's and that didn't end well.......... could history be about to repeat itself?

I'm not that worried as this year the gap between the series and the special has been a long haul wait. Agree with the over priced boxsets as i bought the DVD's out on sale at the moment with out thinking about the entire series boxset thats going to be released later on this year. Not so sure about the double cliff hanger though, i wonder if Moffat can deliver two great finales and two great first episodes.

Rumor has it that Amy will die in the last episode of the first half though as the source of the rumor is the Sun newspaper it's probably BS.

I think it's high time the modern show has a companion killed off to demonstrate that travelling with the Doctor can have deadly consequences so that leaves Amy in the firing line UNLESS River's history is rewritten....................do it Moff!

One of my complaints about New Who is the format and that it lacks the traditional cliffhanger of the classic 4-part serials so I see this as a good thing. In Moffat I trust. :rock

Yeah me too. Seems like a good way to keep the audience from getting burned out. I just hope the cliff hangers aren't like the RTD ones where he keeps trying to outdo himself every time with something bigger.

aside from the annoying little kid, what companions have been killed off in the past? i don't remember seeing any yet, but I still have a lot of watching to do.

Katrina and Sarah Kingdom (Hartnell's The Dalek Masterplan). We thought Peri had been killed in Trial of a Time Lord (and I still feel they should have left it so).

That's probably because they would have to give half their budget to the Terry Nation estate.

Some good news (for me): No Daleks in the upcoming series. :blissy

That's good news for me as well :hi5:

Maybe we'll get the Mondasian Cybermen in the next series now, I just hope they don't get redesigned by the same person responsible for the crappy Silurians in the last series.

Maybe its time to invent a new badass alien, I feel the Daleks are pointless now and offer no threat since they have been beaten time and time again and the cybermen need a drastic overhaul to be brought back from 'borg' impersonators RTD made them. Moffat already created a credible villian in the 'Weeping Angels' but i feel its time to create another big baddie which im hoping gets done in the next series.

IMO Daleks should get at least 1 episode a year. They're always fun even if they are neutered a bit...but aren't all bad guys in every series in the history of television?

The Daleks definitely need a break. They've become what the Borg became on Star Trek. Originally, they felt like a truly unstoppable threat, but they were eventually overused (thanks Voyager )to the point that they were nothing more than a gimmick to pull in ratings. The Daleks are like Freddy Krueger. We no longer watch them because they're scary, but because we have become comfortable with them. I mean, we had the Doctor holding them at bay with a cookie for Christ's sake.

Its not like the Daleks were threatening while Tom Baker was the Doctor. I mean, he defeats them with a coat thrown over their eye or by pushing the Dalek leader around like a defenseless cripple in a wheelchair.
