So I'm renting the new Doctor Who starting from the "first" season with Christopher Eccleston(sp?).

Anyway. Its pretty bad. I expected cheese having seen the old DW when I was a kid, but the acting is pretty bad too. I finished the 2nd disc recently. So the question is will it get better than I've seen. Will I actually ever care about these characters? Does the acting get better, does the writing get better.

The first disc had decent episodes like the one with Charles Dickens but the second disc had a really bad one with the farting body snatchers...

Whats the rest of the series got going for it?

I like some British shows, so I don't think thats the issue. Its just not connecting.

If you aren't liking it after you watch Father's Day or The Empty Child, you probably won't like it.

I love it. I think the writing/acting/soundtrack is fanTAStic! :rock :rock :rock

ps I also love the Classic Who (have been a fan since the late 70's).

Thus far my favorite part of the show is the opening theme. :lol

A while ago a friend of mine sent me a link to a video of how the original theme was created...lmk if you haven't seen that before and I'll find it for you.

As someone who's been watching the show since the mid-70s my suggestion to you is to weather the first season as it sets up the next three seasons of pure GOLD. David Tennant is a JOY to watch and every moment of the show with him is brilliant.

My wife wasn't a big fan of the first season either but she's a rabid fan of the show now.

So yes, it gets MUCH better.

Personally, I've been a life long Doctor Who fan and thought the first season with Eccleston was the best they have done. He is definitely a different kind of Doctor, but he turned out to be my favorite.

Some people will crucify my for this, but David Tennant is okay at best. He is too much in love with humanity as a whole. It seems like all he does in some episodes is marvel at humanity. As for the stories, the first part of series two is incredible but goes incredibly lame by the second half. The third series is like a groin kick, but the fourth has turned out to be really good so far.

I hope the rumors are true that David Tennant is leaving and being replaced with Robert Carlisle. He would do a much better job.

Tennant is not leaving. He is currently filming the 2008 Christmas special and has signed on for the 3 specials in 2009.

I could see it, but thats not gonna be for 2 more years. I totally agree that he glories too much in how awesome humanity is.

I might like Tennant better it sounds. Eccelston seems a bit too bitter and spiteful. I'd prefer if the Doctor had a tinge of "Mr. Weasley" from Harry Potter in him.

From the first season The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances were my favorite episodes that season. if you won't like those, you probably won't like it at all. For the second season, try The Girl In The Fireplace and The Satan Pit/The Impossible Planet. If you STILL dont like those, just stop watching the show because those IMO are the best episodes.

I had watched the first episode and wasn't that impressed. But I got into it later and I think it was the Empty Child that cinched it for me.

Girl in the Fireplace was one of the best pieces of television ever.

Between Eccleston and Tennant, I liked Eccleston better. Hes not quite the A-hole he is in some movies I have seen with him (ie: Gone in 60 seconds, 28 Days Later). He had a sad reality to him.. a loneliness if you will. Some people attribute that to, well, what happened.
I can't go into it without spoiling the (possible) surprise.
The first episode infers that he has only JUST regenerated, BUT it also implys that he may have travelled alone for some time in the Eccleston incarnation.

For me the quality of the revived Doctor Who takes a steep nosedive in series 3 with barely any episodes from that point onwards worth watching more than once.
IMO even the best episodes of Nu-Who fail to better the quality of the best Classic stories in anything but the production values,David Tennant is pretty good but acts way too "human" in the way he reacts to situations and some of the moments where he references things from Earth's popular culture such as the godawful Harry Potter moment in The Shakespeare Code are very badly executed and seem to have been added to the script just for the sake of it.
Due to most of the stories being one offs as opposed to 4 or 6 part serials it doesn't leave time for any strong supporting characters and as a result most of them are the most cardboard stereotypes possible, and no matter what period in history they are in they all speak the same ridiculously cliched modern English.
I know it's not meant to be 100% historically accurate but the other week we had a Roman youth behaving like a modern teenager which frankly was embarassing to watch.
If you are already wondering about the quality of Nu-Who after not seeing many episodes I urge you to avoid Torchwood at all costs as it will likely send you into a coma with it's tediousness.
RTD has done some good in reviving the franchise but it's time for someone else to take over, ideally after the four specials then if Tennant leaves too the 5th series can be the start of a whole new era.

When the first season was airing i thought it was the best and thought it got better Tennant came along. I don't know if its got better but i still love the show and always excited to see a new epiosde.

Maybe something to do with me not have a doctor to watch when i was younger to compare it against.

I watched and liked Torchwood for much of the first season, but then quite literally it became too gay for me.
