Does Doctor Who get better?

I watched and liked Torchwood for much of the first season, but then quite literally it became too gay for me.

That didn't exactly help me warm to the show either. I'm all for equality but RTD's agenda of putting as much (for want of a better word) "gayness" in his shows as possible even if it's totally out of place for the genre as it most definitely is with Doctor Who & Torchwood is IMO not going to make the masses find these sorts of subjects more acceptable.

I haven't watched Doctor Who since the early '80s. I've thought about watching some since then, but have no idea where to start.

Its poor mans sci - fi

imo

Effects are cheap (compared with Hollywood and US sci fi) but the writings good / reasonable

I watch it but Im never bothered if I miss a show unlike BSG or SG

I bought a DVD of one of the 1st Seasons (think it has 4 shows on it) with Tennant in as he has been the one saving grace for me watching it beyond the 1st season (I bought em so I could show em to my son when he is old enough)

Id sooner have it than not, but i wouldnt pay again for a DVD or rent it from a Shop

As long as its on "Free" tv (not that any TV is free anymore) then ill watch

just my opinion apologies to any die hard who fans

The reasons I stopped watching Torchwood as well as Six Feet Under are the same as why I don't watch Big Love, Taxi Cab Confessions, or the Jerry Springer Show.

I don't enjoy seeing counter culture displayed for the sole purpose of displaying counter culture or shock value.

I don't think Torchwood is counter culture or shock value. You have to take into consideration where it is made. The English don't have our hang-ups or sex or gays like we Americans do. To them it's just part of the story.

I haven't been to Britain or know many Britains, so I don't know. For me I definately felt like that homosexual relation between the Torchwood Capt. and the WWII soldier was definately going for the "oh my" gut shot to normal sensibilities.

Actually I think it was just the opposite, but worked on a lot of different levels. Rather than done for "shock" value, it was portrayed as just as normal and reasonable a relationship as a heterosexual one might be. But it was also a funny comment on how incredibly narcissistic Harkness is, so that he'd actually fall in love with himself given the opportunity.

Hmm. I didn't get normal at all, but I can admit maybe its a personal hangup or something...:huh

My first Episode of Doctor who, EVER ( new series or old) Was Dalek from the christopher eccelson series. THat was all it took, and i was hooked. I've got the Begenning box set as well, i want to go back and watch more of the old stuff, just have not had time ( or money) yet

Just watch the episode Dalek from season one mate, It's goood :) it's VERY good.

Oh yeah, that was a really good episode too. It really sets up Eccleston's doc as someone with real emotions and also is a great turning point for Rose that sets up her character for what's to come.

My first experience with Doctor Who was with the new show, and I had a rough go with the first 4 or so eps, as I got used to the show's style, but I loved Chris Eccleson (SP?) and Billie Piper, so I was upset when Tennet took over and wanted to hate him for half of season 2, but could not - I absolutely love Tennet and at this point, I will hate whoever takes over.

On a side note, I am soo pumped for the Rose character in S4!!!!

I've been a Who fan for about 30 years starting with the old Tom Baker episodes. Loved them all the way through the Colin Baker years, but something happened with the show during the Sylvester years. I have his available episodes on DVD but can hardly get through a viewing.
Totally enjoy the new episodes, although I agree that squeezing a full story into 45 minutes is hard to pull off. I always look forward to the 2 parters.
I thought Chris did an amazing job bringing new life to the character and would have liked to have seen him continue on in a second season, however, I think David is fantastic. Season 2 is by far the strongest season, 3 was a let down, but 4 seems to be coming back strong! And although I cringed at the idea of Donna Noble joining on for Season 4, I've really enjoyed the odd chemistry between them so far.

I really liked Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor and "Dalek" was his best episode. I also think it's the best of the one off stories in Nu-Who so far.
With 1 exception I think the 2-part stories have been the strongest of Nu-Who and the one that's in progress in the current series looks like continuing this trend.
Like BillyB I've been suprised at how tolerable Donna Noble has been so far as after her previous appearance I was fully expecting to put my foot throught the TV screen during episode 1.

I'd rather have my bikini line waxed by a dalek than watch David Tenant stumble through another episode acting like the duracel bunny on speed.

And don't get me started on Billie Piper - if I have to hear my dad one more time tell me that she's "intelligent looking" I'm gonna hunt her down the shoot that wide ass smile off her face.

Too excessive? :dunno

:lol

:rock:rock:rock Thats an opinion that makes sense!!

Growing up in the US it was hard to be a Doctor Who fan, I did watch and love Tom Baker as the Doctor (mid to late 70's). Then it was gone, it dropped off the radar until the new series started (Thank you BBCA!). At first I was just glad to see The Doctor again, but now David is by far my favorite. Long live Doctor Who! So to answer the original question, yes it does get much better (imo).

That was an awesome post.

Per McCoy's Doctor: I felt that something happened production-wise in his tenure which really lowered DW's quality. I actually don't think it had anything to do with either Sophia Aldred or McCoy. I thought they were both great characters, well acted (for the most part).

But the sound quality (ie the mics) suddenly became really bad, the pacing started to be sort of awkward, and the direction sometimes hindered the story telling. Its too bad too. I felt McCoy had a lot of potential as the Doctor.

It also didn't help that the producer at the time (JNT) felt the need to turn the Doctor into a cartoon character with that dumb question mark umbrella and the question mark sweater. Just plain stooooopid.

If ANYBODY says that Billie Piper is intelligent looking, then they are stupid. That's why I liked Martha more, Martha actually looks like she can add 2 + 2. I will admit that Tennant does have a lot more...."energy" than Eccleston, but that's just part of his charm and his character. He enjoys humans and enjoys doing what he does.
