It still plays well in my mind after my two viewings, but it's undeniably Denis' Dune, not Herbert's.
Another big thing that I miss is the paramount importance of Spice. The fact that the movies gloss over the Spacing Guild and the Navigators is probably at fault. I suppose Villeneuve didn't want to be accused of a "Trade Federation" fiasco...

Now that people have gotten some distance on this, how is it playing in their head? Is it still "great"... or has the luster worn off ...?
Still love "this" Dune world, but like I said even after the first viewing of 2, I much prefer 1 - it's a far more polished and elegant film. But there are many, many, scenes in 2 that are great (just a few aggravating ones too :ROFLMAO:)

Oh wow that's approaching Rise of Skywalker viewings for you isn't it, lol.

:monkey3
You made me laugh, but then I thought, I wonder what else I've watched a stupid amount of times from films that have been made in recent years and I could only think of 2 others - Maverick, and Hell or High Water.

Slim pickings these days :(

I might say that TGM is my favorite film since LOTR, who would have guessed that! I never saw Hell or High Water, it's that good huh?

Hmm

My favorite since LOTR, that’s tough.

If I had to quickly pick 8 that I could put as equals then…

TWS
TGM
TheBatman
Dredd
RogueOne
MinusOne
Avengers 1
IW

I might have that exact list but with IW replacing Dredd. I'm still a huge fan of Cap:TFA though I know that most people put that in the "average" category.

Hell or High Water is masterful.

Taylor Sheridan - his first 3 were great:

Sicario 8/10
Hell or High Water 9/10
Wind River 10/10

I thought Sicario was decent (but that was another one by Denis Villeneuve) but I *loved* Wind River. I'll definitely have to check out HOHW, thanks for the heads up!

TWS and GMO make my list as well. And for pure fun at the theater my #1 pick is still The Avengers. It's showing it's age these days but it was THE event movie of 2012, an absolute blast that demanded multiple viewings and launched the MCU into the stratosphere. And while TGM was/is a great time I'd still pick Edge Of Tomorrow over it if forced to choose between them. A few others that would be high on my list would be Casino Royale, GoTG, Baby Driver and (of course)....

Damn how could I forget the Avengers! :slap

The best midnight screening of my entire life.

This was when they did midnight shows before the TDKR shooting changed the first shows to 7pm!

Even a better experience than TFA! :slap

Ok I added Avengers to my list, I feel better now thanks Buff lol

Oh look I now added IW to my list thx Khev :yess: Anything else you recommend I add lol

And of course the Dune 1-2 combo

:chase

So I’m kinda getting optimistic about this franchise now that I’m hearing that it’s about a savior people prop up but turns out to be like anakin and makes a mess of things.

Thought it was about sand and fighting big worms. Idk

Yeah... it's a cautionary tale.

I find the experience of repeated watchings of both Dune films is better than my residual memory of them. There are a few films (also tv shows, books (comics), records) that I'm extremely fond of, but my memory of which tends to remain somewhat truncated. However, whenever I submit to the experience of watching them again they prove to be better than my memory. It's like there's more on the screen than I fully absorb and with Dune I feel like whatever weaknesses it has (no film is perfect) are easily dismissed in favour of what's great and admirable about the overall filmmaking. Gotta give credit to Villeneuve's for what he was able to accomplish with his cinematic adaptation of Dune. It's still a thrilling and impactful film watching experience. Despite the lack of tight adherence to the books, I think the films will go down as classics of the genre and hold a firm place in history.

I finally watched Dune 2.

I started by re-watching Dune 1. Man. That's a good-*** movie. The ultimate Dune movie in my heart is still the unmade masterpiece by Jodorowsky, and I think a lot of elements in these movies are similar, so it's fun to pretend that we're really watching Jodorowsky's Dune finally come to life. The Harkonnens designs and their music, and the Sardakour chant were my favorite parts.

I also really loved the sound design when they used "The Voice." Great effect!!

It had the same feel as Kill Bill 1 at the end...satisfying to a point, but you know you've just watched half a movie.

OK....now Part 2.....

I was pretty bored, to be honest. It was just....boring. All the world building was already in place but it felt like we were just treading water for 2 hours til we got to the finale.

Zendaya. In real life, she's fine as hay-eeeelllll. Especially when she's wearing goofy stuff like that C-3PO outfit. But she was unbearable in this movie. Just scowl, scowl, scowl. Was the only time she smiled in the visions Paul had in the first movie? Come on Zendaya....lighten up, Francis.

I also thought Florence Pugh was an odd casting choice. She sounds like she has an at-least two packs a day smoking habit.

I guess my favorite part was the Harkonnen planet, again for the set and costume design, as well as the ominous music. Going into black and white was a nice touch.

I found the ending jarring this time. I thought Part 2 was gonna be it. But clearly there's more. I didn't appreciate the abrupt ending.

Huh.

I don't know. It was OK. Part 1 was better. This was....dull. Tedious. Drawn out.

I also watched Sicario again before this viewing, and that was way better than both of these put together. Incredible mastery of creating tension. I think this Denis guy just might have "the goods" to make it in this crazy business.

Agreed on that bit! :lol
