At first I thought Microsoft's choice of name for the motion sensing/voice recognition stuff was odd, but it is very unique. NATAL (pronounced "Nuh-tall") sounds like some kind of proprietary artificial intelligence abbreviation from a sci-fi film or something.

Though it does recall the baby wards in hospitals.

The trick will be getting that base to go out and buy NATAL.

That's really the thing. How many console add-ons in history have been successful? Unless you count the rumble pack, I can't think of a single one.

Developers are hesitant to make their game require an add on to play, especially in this day and age when most games are multi-platform.

What would be really cool is if with Natal they use that Milo technology to create a 'personality' for your Xbox, so for instance you turn it on and the guy says Hello, how are you? And you can be like, Milo, I want to play Gears of War 2

That is cool until your Xbox refuses to let you play Gears of War 2.

I certainly hope not. I like being put in the shoes of a character and doing things that only buttons could pull off - ie: I would never be able to pull off some of the moves solid snake does, or any larger than life character by moving my body. And if I can, it's a short cut gimmick that I'd rather just do with my thumbs.

Facial and voice recognition though would be awesome in Bethesda Games where emotional choices come into play though.

If NATAL can spawn a new breed of games (beyond casual party games) that can really take advantage of this stuff - and I don't see it fitting well into traditional hard core games - then it will have a future in video games.

It won't replace the way we play games just yet.How will you play a shooter with this? After a while it will get too exhausting.

It is the future in how we will interact with consoles and home equipment in the future. The concept has a lot to overcome and really be correctly incorporated in games (not SIXAXIS incorporated). If all major releases have an option for NATAL-controlling that means extra programing time and money.

As long as you get to choose that personality. I would hate to be the guy stuck with the Milo with a bright pink tanktop blasting Metallica yelling "Aaaay pappo, don't play that Natal ^^^^, you gots to get back on the Halo ^^^^^es!!! Owwww!!!!"

But what a stupid name, I keep thinking this guy when I say it

I keep thinking of this:

as in prenatal or this:

:naughty

...and then I start thinking about how the one leads to the other.....:D

It was smart of them to get Spielberg to talk up NATAL, if only to raise attention of mainstream coverage.

I'm still a little suspicious that Natal will work as good as they demoed, but time will tell. I hope it does. The trick with making this a success will be to hook in the 3rd party devs to make games so Microsoft is going to have to do some massive marketing for this.

Hahaha, Microsoft is gorilla ^^^^ing Sony & Nintendo!!

Facebook, Twitter, 1080P Netflix, full games available for downloading. And free stream radio from Last.fm!! DAMN!!!!

To bad no Blu-Ray. Guess I'll have to keep the PS3 around.

That's not the point. This just brings so many more users to the 360. That's the point.

Oh yeah, and all the game announcements so far are killer them to, except for the new MGS game!!!! That is gonna ^^^^ing rock!!!

buy a ps3 then

I already have one...and the 360.

I don't see what the draw is. For example, Facebook is on everything now.

Community and connection = the future.

To a degree. Microsoft really likes to oversell that rhetoric though. Facebook and twitter on my xbox? Xbox Live is amazing for online multiplayer, sure, but sometimes I feel like Microsoft sees video games as an opportunity to make it some end all community device. They need to learn it's okay to not include personal computer and mobile functions on their gaming machine.

Who is going to buy a GAME console because it has facebook and twitter (that already has on his iphone)? It's about the games.Where there any huge sale boost after last years Netflix deal? A new game or IP can do that.

There was a HUGE sales boost of Netflix accounts. That was the point.
