It's not about being British. Riots happen anywhere. The difference between riots today and those of old is the capacity of social media to organise and mobilise the players; this networking also helps escalate and expand the activity to those groups and individuals who likely would've remained ignorant and out of the action.
So it starts with one group with a legitimate grievance protesting peacefully (the family of the shooting victim) and gains momentum through a network of bored, disaffected, mischievous, anarchic or just plain stupid individuals.
