The Legendary Scale Figures - aside from the eventual ESB Premium Format and new DX 1/6 Vader are Sideshow's opportunity to create the most definitive Vader collectible modern companies have to offer...

Considering Sideshow mentioned that these would basically be in roughly the same size 3ft tall and not an actual scale, I don't expect the Vader to be in actual 1/2 scale to Vader himself, namely 3.5 feet.

That said, I hope that the scale issues between components are not a problem the way they are currently with Maul (head and feet fairly large for the stature - even though heis a short dude - and the saber way large)

It is also my hope that Sideshow try to get one of the Vader Experts as a consultant - personally I wouldn't mind if it was Gino, or any of the other hard- core Vader aficionados...his lifesize Vader's are great templates to work from...

Cinemaquette has already made some improvements on their offering and is in my opinion one of the best representations of Vader on the market, short of being a prop replica. The stance is nore natural now. The helmet and armour were also scanned and nicely reproduced from items in the Lucasfilm Archive. (whether or not they were screen used, production cast, or touring versions can be debated, but they are still authentic) Even the Facemask is probably the best scanned face made to date (the dome attachment could be adjusted, to look more accurate, but the shape of the dome is also correct) - (
and yes people will say that you can make a decent lifesized prop for the same amount - true - but these are figures, not props - the same can be said about the large Compulsion statues and the Bronze statues - but these are statues we are talking about that take up less space and are ready-made)

In this scale it is my hope that SS gives us a mask that looks close, and though they do not seem to scan anything, a supervised sculpt would be in order...(though I'm of the opinion that the 1:1 bust facemask has either been scanned or mechanically reproduced and then cleaned up - because it has all the little shapes of an authentice Vader including the s-curve of his right cheek (which is also present on the CM) - but seems to have "shrunken properties, like the eyebrows, nose bridge, thin edges, and a shallow nose...that're indicative of a mechanical reproduction of sorts)

As far as poses go,
I hope they opt for one of the following - or similar:

1. Hands resting on the belt boxes (like the Kotobukiya artfx+)
2. Hand resting on belt box - one hand pointing ("don't fail me again...Admiral."
3. Hands down to the side hidden behind the cape "The force is strong with you young skywalker...but you are not a jedi yet."
4. Hands on the hips
5. ignited saber - upright posture, up to the side like a samurai
6. ignited saber down to side - other hand using the force palm out
7. ignited out to the side like he's stalking forward
8. please no kneeling in this scale - maybe for another smaller scale -

Points they gotta hit:

- Accurate Helmet and correct masking of silver facets - no weird shaped domes - study the pics, ss people!
- Correct shoulder armour in terms of shape and color ( - no "silver bells" - shoulder bells) - the PF and the 1/6 look the same could be better - VADER HAS ALL-BLACK SHOULDER BELLS in OT
- Correct Gloves - short (for esb and roj) and cuffed-looking the weight of the leather sags and bunches at the wrist
- suit wrinkles at the crook of the arms, abdomen, etc
- Correct material for cape -- HEAVY fabric (the actual was wool I think) that falls like the custom capes for the 1/6 on the message boards here -- GREAT looking capes btw!! or at least something that can LOOK heavy and drapey...as well as billowy...but I prefer drapey...
- correct details on whichever belt box they use
- correct-looking codpiece - no thin wafers here
- If they do a removable helmet - I don't mind if they use a similar sculpt to their 1:1 Anakin Portrait maybe closer to Sebastian Shaw, but just as mean-looking- it kinda grew on me
- The base should be basic - Death star floor, Cloud City freeze chamber floor, gantry floor
-

ok that's it...just something to chew on =) =)

Sideshow, Pls get Gino or someone else who really knows their Vaderstuff to help make this Vader a must have...

Don't get your hopes too high. Until now SS weren't interested in making their products more accurate than the artistic interpretation they go with...

I know=) - if anything I'm happy with the CM -but if Sideshow has it in them to one up CM I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Sideshow interprets the character, this much we know ... but lets hope any interpretation looks better and not worse than their onscreen counterparts (like the Alien maquette looks really Nosferatu and the pose kinda sux - though the painted details are nicer than the CM's paint job I think)

I agree, they have a knack for overthinking the pose. The Big Chap maquette pose really ruined a piece which could have been stellar.

For Vader they will probably have a lightsaber out pose, both to showcase it and match Obi Wan.

this is not a committee, let the artist do their thing. don't like what they come up with? that's fair... don't buy it (there are bound to be just as many of us that do appreciate their point of view).

I'm a Vader Collector - I buy it regardless - I just prefer a better job -- all this don't like it dont buy it mumbo jumbo doesn't make sense when it hasnt yet been made...

Plus as an artist, I don't mind working with others when trying to recreate something that's someone elses vision...

I'm sure there are lots of folks who appreciate anything sculpted - doesn't make it worth the price you pay...
I'm simply offering a suggestion to make a more faithful product -- if you have a problem with the suggestion, don't buy anything where a team was incvolved in making an item -- take a look at any thing SS does -- theres more than one artist involved becuase each has their speciality -- some do armour, others do portraitsn others do clothing...

This is not the same as micromanaging nad having too many cooks in the kitchen -- this is specialization - like they way films are made...or toys...or projects of this caliber...
we dont get by in the world alone -- we all need help -- and that goes for projects of this magnitude...

I didnt say that Gino or anyone else has to stand over the shoulder of the main sculptor , but any artist worth his salt will want to have either the right materials for reference or the observation of the specialists for consultation...

I feel sorry for any artist who thinks he doesn't need reference -- everything is reference for an artist -- its what he draws inspiration from -- and sometimes it is specific -- especially if it is from a source - in this case a costume that has a specific look...this are arrist interpreted, but to a degree that they stand up to close inspection -- not to the degree where it becomes an oversized hasbro figure or giant mcfarlane styled statue...

ideally u get the best person for the job - if they aren't they'll need help if not replacement...otherwise you wind up with a mediocre product - but the aim is something spectacular obviously for a company with a reutation to uphold and customers to please...

sorry u have to suffer thru my numerous misspellings etc--- am typing super fast and kinda rambling before i take off --

Bottom line,-- if I'm not clear enough I apologize:

- I'm spoiled by lots of awesome looking vaders -- please look really good if you're expensive -- in a nutshell -- that's all =) =)

no artist can satisfy the needs of every collector... one just has to accept art for what it is. David Bowie is one of my favorite songwriters but not everything he does holds a place in my heart... and no, writing him with suggestions has never been an option.

But u see this is not ralph mcquarrie or johm mollo we r tslking about...this is a sculptor recreating something thats supposed to resemble anothers work, ...when an artist like paul komoda sculpts something of hr gigers, he consults with him for feedback...even a master uses references and feedback...is there a problem with feedback? When a musician creates, theres no rule that says u cannot have help...even the beatles had help n inspiration from those aroind tjem...doesnt make them any less creative

Michael jackson had the ear of paul mvcartney...he was also inspired by elvis presley,,,david bowie sang with bing crosby and did stuff with freddy mercury...great artists dont exist in a vacuum...

And I do accept art for what it is...i am an artist...i also accept that this is a business, even lucasfilm has to give their feedback and make suggestions in case u wetent aware...they do it with many products...its not like the producer interfering in a film just to get his prints all over it...this is how they do it, because they are representing characters licensed to them, with limited creative license to depict them...if he made vader on tiptoe, should I just accept that it is art? ...

Again I am simply suggesting they have someone who is familiar woth the character to serve as a reference point, doesnt mean theyll cobtrol the artist...theyre there to offer insight...i dont know any true artist who is closed minded enough to not be open to suggestions...his decision to accept, manipulate, or embrace information...that is a true artists openness...even kyle wndrix who sculpted the neca predator was asking for help from tje predator community online for some details...the smart person uses the eesources and ia humble enough to know when he doesnt know everything about anything...now that said, sure an artist can simply interpret and say to hell with how accurate it is, but I.ve found, the more arrogance, the less room for improvement...if thats the case, the artist probably didnt grow much in the first place...every great artist , who recreates others work, that I know is not too proud to have some help...pride is the killer of humility...

Are we now picking these to pieces before they have made them? :dunno

:nana:

No, I think the OP is just trying to say Sideshow has a chance to make a really special piece with the Vader LSF and it would be a shame for them to put out something like Cinemaquette's Vader(which is a fail for $2k IMHO). They've shown with Obi-Wan and Maul(aside from his oversized lightsaber) that they can do this scale of statue in grand fashion and when they get around to Vader it needs the utmost attention to detail.

Short and sweet...

Again sorry for the misspellings etc, typing on my phone...

And to be clear, I dont really care if an artist doesnt wNt any feedback or help, but thats a shame bc people who like to improve theire wk thrive on constructive feedback...

thinking of getting the cm Vader 29 inch high looks impresive.

I like it, and thats steve wangs work, sculpted some of the original predators and accoutrements....did the pred cm...mind u that was artist interpreted, and not screen accurate bc he said he didn't know details by heart, plus wanted the headshape to be more evolved to what the design grew into,,, basically closer to predator 2....

But I like the vader...lots of naysayers on that too probably bc folks say its not accurate enough, or they hate the stance, orwhathaveyou, but its gud enuf for me, ..cm is still tweaking it and I.m still giving suggestions...they may not like it for all I know, but they actually listened to some and I.m grateful that theu care what their supporters think of the product of such a well loved character...

I had my fill with "artistic interpretations" with the Star Wars; Unleashed line of figures. Those were great and I bought them all but for the money I'd drop on a 1/3 Vader, I want him as close to screen rep as they can get him.

If you guys want it accurate, PLEASE email Sideshow and tell them to get GINO to join the development team.

FYI, GINO is known as the Vader expert and helped out with the Vader helmets from eFX. Now you know why they look so screen accurate.

GINO IS THE MAN!

Please email Sideshow and tell them we want him to help them out.
FYI, here are his Vader 1:1 pieces:

Gino is willing to help ..talked a bit w him at comic con...i suggested it as well....as dumbledore said, help is always there... for those who ask for it...

I think SS will do a superb job when they come around to this one for the simple fact that Vader is scrutinized the most of all the SW characters when it comes to creating a representation. I’m not worried about it I just hope that I’m financially ready to buy this one.

Unfortunately none of the Vader figures, statues or dios are too accurate...
