I've actually been discussing with some friends that...

Diane isn't dead or she doesn't actually commit suicide. The scene directly after we hear the gunshot shows smoke spewing from the bed and the bum/monster appearing once more. And the last thing we see and hear is the Club Silencio lady saying "Silencio". That would imply that Diane was still dreaming, right?

If it's another twist and the ending has a meaning then i can't figure out that one,i thought it was just Lynch's way of ending the movie.Lynch is a dreamer,no doubt about that.

i need to watch this movie AGAIN,i keep forgetting the smaller details

Probably, makes sense as Rita dissappeared when she turned the key on the Blue Box,never thought of that theory though, only that it meant the truth, explains why the Retirees came out of the box to scare Diane, the past is THAT terrifying

Concerning the old couple:
They represent Diane's past. They're completely random strangers that she talks to when she first arrives in Hollywood with aspirations of acting and making it big.

the dude at the cafeteria and the Bum had a similar meaning just don't know what, remember him talking to the other dude about the dream he had about that specific situation?

Concerning that:
It's the realization that there's some truth in dreams i.e. for Diane in her dream someone is trying to kill Rita and she's protecting her when in reality it was Diane who put out a hit on Rita and had Rita killed.

Yeah i remember but i meant what they represents as "The Scary couple" that "scared Diane to death".Some Random people scaring her to death seems too simple in such a deep complicated movie. She didn't have any relation to them unless i have missed something.

They're not random like meaningless. I meant random in that they just happened to be standing there at the bus station when Diane arrived. But they're specifically in her thoughts because they represent when Diane was innocent and "pure" before she become obsessed, vindictive, vengeful and a failed, washed up loser. They represent her conscience and guilt because Diane KNOWS what she did was wrong.

Ah right, yeah her conscience and guilt was eating her up inside(Old couple scaring her to death) until she couldn't take it anymore

have many times have you seen this movie?

The entire thing, twice. Then bits and pieces of the movie here and there (like the last hour.. or hour and a half, etc). Not sure if it's STARZ, HBO, Showtime or Encore or whatever, but one cable station recently started showing it again so it's always been on the last month or so. :lol

Besides the ones already mentioned-

No Country for Old Men
John Carpenter's The Thing
2001: A Space Odyssey

John Carpenter's The Thing

Agreed. And I don't acknowledge the videogame/comic book explanations either:

Comic
Childs is infected.

Videogame
Neither Childs nor MacReady are infected. Childs dies from exposure to the elements and MacReady shows up later in the game so he escaped/was rescued at some point.

That's not movie cannon IMO.

The Thing is one of those movies that I'm happy that there's an ambiguous ending. You just don't know. I think it's better that way.

I'm not even sure that Lynch has a clear idea in his own mind of what is going on in some of his films. I'm not his biggest fan, but Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks were awesome. He clearly has some interesting visions.

Another one I thought about is Time Bandits. The biggest WTF ending of any movie I saw as a kid, that was apparently intended for kids. Gilliam is a certifiable freak.

Dispite knowing there would be a sequel, I ____ing LOVED Dead Man's Chest ending. Jack dies, and then Barbossa comes down from the stair case? Epic.

Agreed , that's something I always felt with the original ALIEN though so I'm a little worried about these prequel sequel things.
