They have to play it that way. There wouldn't be much of a story if everyone knew what Zombies were already.

I disagree and think it is lazy writing. That's like having an alien movie and nobody knows what an alien is. If you watch any good zombie movie, you'll realize it is not really about the zombies, rather a reflection on society and the human condition. Zombie genre is about the true nature of human beings and how quickly society falls apart when everything goes to hell. Knowing about zombies doesn't change that. Do really think a well trained military couldn't wipe out a threat of shambling zombies? It's the chaos, selfishness, ruthlessness, self preservation and the human vs human conflict that leads to zombies winning. Not the early surprise attacks from those who didn't realize what is happening. If you watch the walking dead, zombies are all but an after thought to the true threats and plot. As Buck Underbelly said, film can be smarter and reference modern society while still delivering its message.

Wouldn't you rather watch something that makes you realize, oh maybe that wouldn't work, or I guess I didn't see it that way, or I never thought about that aspect. Instead, we're left with constantly criticizing what characters are doing especiallywhen everyone knows or should know better and it's common knowledge. I think when you realize you couldn't do any better in a situation or that scenerio would be out of your control no matter what, is when you truely get frightened.

If you think that, then why do you care if they use the word Zombie or not? In your opinion, knowing about Zombies before hand wouldn't change anything. In MY opinion, it would, and I can understand why they don't reference it.

As for aliens, if you go by the movies, there are all kinds of aliens, so you never know what you're going to get.

Well, I care that they use the word zombie because I think it is disengenuine to dumb down the content to make it more believable. In my opinion, you cannot make a good thought provoking film or show referencing modern day quasi reality and completely ignore or remove part of society's culture and lexicon which zombies clearly are. I understand people not calling them zombies in the very beginning but don't you think it is rather odd that to this day, shows like the Walking Dead have not once used the term zombie? It plays as if the word or concept never existed, and is also a shun to it's heritage.

If I may ask, what would knowing about zombies change?

You are correct about aliens, there is a mixed bag, and still they are commonly referred to as aliens and their mythos is known by the characters in film.

:lecture @ Ween X 2. Zombie movies would not work at all if the populace actually knew what a Zombie was. It would be put down before it even had a chance to get started. You yourself Tinwhiskers said that any good military would put it down before it got legs. I really don't see how some of you enjoy anything that has any sort of inconsistencies in it. Just like the one kid being the only one to know what's going on. In this day and age with social media being what it is, don't you think that everyone would know about a zombie plague almost immediately after it started? Hell a couple years ago a homeless guy was shot and killed by police when he attacked and started eating another homeless guys face. That was posted all over social media within a day.

Couple issues I had with the last nights episode:
The mother and Tobias go through all that trouble to get food and drugs from the high school and then left the cart of food behind. (Tobias popping up at the school was another one of those cheap scares. Apparently he couldn't find a knife anywhere else so he had to go back to a locked school and break in.)

Why would Tobias not want to stay with the mother's family? Safety in numbers and all that.

How did Matt get bit? And why was he incapable of calling/texting his gf back or better yet calling/texting for help?

Yeah I agree with these points and I don't see any satisfactory answer to them.

Can't really blame the kid, gotta blame the horrible writing (for that scene). Not once did the adults explain to her what they saw.

Yep. We've got a bit of ''Lost-itus'' here with characters choosing to stay silent about things that they shouldn't stay silent about so as to create dramatic tension.

But it was OK overall.

I think you might be missing my point, actually two points. The first is I find it strange that no one mentions the word zombie or concept at any time in these shows. I'm not saying that at first when there are strange attacks happening that people would automatically assume it must be zombies. However, when you see a group of glazed eye bloody people all hundled around eating someone's guts you think someone would say holy s***, I can't believe zombies are real and this is happening. It's as if the entire concept of what a zombie is has never even been thought of or existed.

The second point is I don't believe zombies are the real threat and is why knowing what a zombie is would have no bearing on the outcome. In any movie or show it's not like the military or police are overrun and decimated before anyone knows what is going on. It's the human emotions and lack of humanity that allows zombies to win. Did the family take refuge in a barbershop because they were running from zombies? Nope, they were running from humans. Humans who were rioting and showing their true nature when society breaks down a little. People not being emotionally able to "kill" their family memebers when they turn, people trying to get over on others while things are falling apart, people abandoning their posts or duties to go to their families, etc. are the reasons zombies win. The theme has always been we're too busy fighting each other which causes zombies to overrun us. Not because they surprise anyone in the begining. Watch the original Dawn of the Dead's (masterpiece) opening scene and it basically portrays exactly what I'm trying to say. It shows people arguing about what is the best way to deal with the situation all while the world is falling apart around them.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Drives me nuts. Nothing gets me yelling at my TV screen like characters withholding information for no good freaking reason! :lol

And yes, Tobias is a terrible doomsday prepper! Went all the way to the school, left all the food behind and came home with a steak knife! :lol

I finally saw the first episode earlier today...it gave me AIDS :monkey3 In all seriousness, I thought it was kind of boring. I might watch the rest of the season, since there are only six episodes, but I'm in no hurry.

Gotta say, kinda boring so far. Nothing has hooked me with the show. Don't care about the main characters and the writings nothing special. If the main cast all get bitten/eaten by walkers in episode six, I may tune in to see a possible second season.

I'd be eating her. Without a doubt.

Fleeing into the desert? Probably not the best idea.

Mamma definitely has leader potential. The junkie kid has demonstrated the most street smarts out of any of them so far.

Foreshadowing when papa Salazar called Travis weak? Will he have the strength to put his wife down if she turns?

i like this show so far, but them now being locked down in their for what seems to be the balance of the season, is pretty boring
