i've known real people who lived with their parents too long and got an allowance that could fund this hobby. it was sickening.

Ok, so your situation is a little different but there are few here that are jobless and these collectibles aren't the cheapest of things to be spending money on.
Do they file unemployment and spend that money on toys?

Seriously though I have a little of money saved up. Not a fortune but a little that allows me to buy some luxury items here and there. The main line of figures I'm concentrating on collecting is the HT Resident Evil 5 line. Atm I'm only missing 2 figures from that line (plus one that isn't out yet). I have enough saved up that if I wanted (and I do) I could buy both figures today but there's no telling if I'll need that money tomorrow so thats why I haven't. I also rarely pre-order stuff just incase I end up losing my job or something.

I have two jobs, that's how I afford toys. I also am not into a lot of other things. I don't spend a lot of money on clothes, jewelry, shoes and purses like a lot of women do. I buy toys and DVDs on a regular basis and that's about it. Everything else is when I really need it or it's on sale.
I have money put aside that I don't touch, and make sure I add a little to it every pay check.

I have a minimum wage job right now and still going to school. I love this hobby just as much as anyone. When I had a good job, I was buying everything like you. The way I still buy new stuff is just selling older stuff that I dont consider grails of mine. The most exciting part of this hobby is getting new stuff, so thats what works for me. As far as CC's are concerned, I'm almost as bad as you, but I would never max my 1 and only CC on statues............my general (subject to change 
) rule is, leave at least 2k on it in case of emergency, and if you have more than 1 CC, ditch em. If you wont miss some statues, sell them to get something new and better, but if your in a hole right now, sell enough to get you back on your feet, then just replace older pieces with newer ones.

that's what I've been doing...selling off statues I don't want & buying the ones I do. I've only spent maybe $200-300 of my own money the last few months

Well I was also thinking either these ppl have loaded parents, hella savings, spending grant money from college, spending their GI Bill.
No matter what anyone has saved if they are living on their own, have a family, etc... that $$$ doesn't replace itself especially when there's more going out than coming in.
Of course all just my opinion, I don't know everyone's exact budget and spending range.
I'm thinking a $300 PF could set someone back month of or their share or more of mortgage or rent.

Well guys, I canceled my Berserker Predator pre-order. I also sold my new Predator figure I bought 2 weeks ago, and got today. Also got a refund for an item I bought but was not shipped yet. Small, but a start.
Once Betomatali is paid off, bye bye Paypal account.

I can understand the wanting to buy a lot of stuff. I preorder quite a bit but the point is to never make commitments that can put you into financial trouble down the line.
That's a reason I like the Sideshow preorder system, I can cancel at any time and they give email updates for when something is about to ship. So if I don't have the money, then I cancel. And for a lot of stuff it's pretty easy to cancel them, but there are some times where it's really hard to cancel something I want.
But---because of that, I haven't actually bought any Sideshow figures since the 1/6th Vader, so it's been at least a year since then.
But really, you just have to look down the line and anticipate things that can come up. You have to save at least something each paycheck, otherwise you're going to run into trouble.
As a sidenote, I'm going to run into trouble later, there's a few things coming up that I really would feel bad canceling, so I guess I need to get some money soon.

always, have a contingency plan in terms of hitting rock bottom. coz when you do...you'd wish you had one. remember to prioritize LIFE and Family before hobby and leisure. good luck.

My hours were cut in half for a few months now, and I am actively looking for a more full time position. But I have stopped buying anything and everything in the meantime. My wife and I are managing to get by with her salary (plus benefits), my part salary, and our savings. My wife's a teacher so we don't have any of her paychecks coming til mid September. We may just squeak by this summer but I'm really anxious to find a good steady job before our savings run out.
I haven't bought anything since the Sandtrooper Squad Leader in the beginning of March, and I haven't placed a single pre-order either. Luckily, there hasn't been anything that I absolutely must buy. And I see now that it's just a matter of time before the figures go on sale at etailers or GoHastings.
Believe me, this spending diet is killing me! But I know I, not just shouldn't, but can't buy anything. My wife, OTOH...
And I'm still here every day. Even if I can't buy anything, it's still nice to see what's new and live vicariously through my gainfully employed fellow freaks.
