I think you must be unaware of UNC's new head football coach and recruiting class coming in this year. Given time, that score could be reversed :monkey5

I'm aware. I'm very aware. I am a major college football recruiting honk. Trust me on that one. I live it almost daily. Scary I know.

Butch Davis is an excellent coach. I hope the cancer is nothing serious. In a few years he''ll have them in a good place. Their recruiting class was excellent this year as you said. Marvin Austin is a player. I saw him play a couple times this year, and he's just a beast in the interior line. Just a major "get" for UNC. Pairing him with Tydreke Powell will make a great D-line in years to come. They also got two excellent LB's in Sturdivant and Searcy. I'm not as high on Mike Paulus as others are.... but pulling Greg Little away from Charlie Weiss on signing day was huge.

Now you wanna talk USC recruiting?

They are loaded.... uhm... yes, loaded again. How about the #1 rated Defenseive End (Everson Griffin), #1 RB (Joe McKnight - can you say Reggie Bush all over again?), #1 MLB (Chris Gallipo) and #1 Center (Kris O'Dowd). For good measure they also got the best player in Michigan (#2 corner - Ronald Johnson aka RoJo) and oh well... I could go on forever. The quality of their recruits is off the charts. They are so loaded it's scary.

The thing I love about SC recruits... is that not only is Pete C getting top guys... he's getting the best top guys. Chris Galippo dominated at the Army All-American game and won MVP with 11 (yes 11) tackles. 11 tackles in limited playing time in an All-Star game? Yikes. Griffen had a sack and was all over the QB's.

Oh... and they've already got verbals from 6 of the nation's top players for '08. Ryan Kalil's "little" borther (his nickname is "Beast" or "Monster")- who may be the top OL in the country is committed.

SC will be in the national title hunt for years to come!

Does that mean he is going to get in trouble and get them some more NCAA violations?:lol

Seriously, those ranking are total BS. Sorry being around H.S. football my entire life they dont mean much. A lot of those kids are very overrated and there a lots of very underrated kids. I have seen many highly ranked HS players who racked up huge stats in HS and then didnt do a single thing in College, some never even saw the field. Also if you come from a bigger school you get ranked higher or if you parents, boosters, etc.. help get you publicity you get get higher rankings.

Gotta slightly disagree with you that scouts and rivals rankings don't mean anything.

I certainly agree that there is no difference being ranked #1 or #3. But with modern day scouting being what it is... coaches have a much better ability to discover and uncover talent from all corners. It is amazing how well many of the highly ranked players play in college these days. There are of course players that are highly rated that end up being "busts" (injury or lack of motivation etc.)... after all these kids are only 18 years old.

Here's a very fractional list of USC All-American/NFL starters that were highly rated coming outta high school over the last 4 years. I'd say their rankings were pretty darn accurate.

Darnell Bing - #2 Safety '02
Winston Justice - #5 OL '02
Fred Matua - #6 OL - '02
John David Booty - #1 QB '03
Steve Smith #6 WR '03
Sam Baker - #15 OL - 03
Sed Ellis- #9 DT '03
Reggie Bush - #3 RB '03
Lawrence Jackson #2 - DE '03
Dwayne Jarret #7 WR - '04
Keith Rivers #3 LB '04
Brian Cushing #3 LB - '05
Patrick Turner #1 WR'05
Rey Malaluga - #2 LB '05

There are always hidden gems. Always. Like I said, these kids are only kids and some develop late. Mike Williams (who dominated in college and then ate himself into a crappy NFL player) was the #75 WR coming out of high school. That certainly wasn't close to accurate!

It's no accident that teams with the best recruiting classes according to scout and rivals are usually in the hunt for the prize.....

At many high school games, the game stats are kept by the home team and coaches have been known to pad them in favor of star players to help them get both press and college attention. Of course, that only goes so far.
