I never thought of that about the cigarette thing. I know it originally came from the bundle of sticks definition, since a pack of cigarettes resembles a bundle of sticks.

That stuff will dry you out like no other. It helps to stop the stuffiness for me, but the dryness makes me feel like I'm dying.
