A downpayment is a far cry from a full on purchase. For me, being mainly a 1/6th SW collector at this point, this is a no brainer.

I'm sure you're right. For Bandai to reuse the body they'll need to produce 3po variants, as I can't imagine $400.00 4-LOM and Death Star Droid figures will sell very well.... Same for R2.
