re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

So, considering that this is about the only part of the forum left that has opinions I respect (this being said after comments about axis penetration), I have a query to post here because I love to hear what others think before making up my own mind ;).

I'm trying to decide if I should get the Hot Toys Han Solo and Chewbacca or put the money towards a carded vintage figure instead.

Han and Chewie are $500. You could buy a nice carded vintage figure for that price, almost any from ESB at the very least. Hot Toys is impressive, I've owned several and currently have the stormtrooper, but vintage SW figures always exude class. Are Han & Chewie worth $500? Relative and subjective I know, but when you look at it in regards to what else that chunk of cash could be used for, it's not necessarily so obvious.

There has been a lot of conversation in here about "getting out", "finishing the collection", finding a happy medium, etc. and I've always kind of felt that if a 1:6 Han & Chewie ever got released I could grab it and call it a day for 1:6 - for the most part. Of course there's always the desire to add Luke, Leia, Vader, etc. and that's the difficult line to tread, but if I really had to limit myself, Han & Chewie would be it.

That being said, a carded vintage figure will never look like a doll standing on your shelf. My wife is not a fan of 1:6, but she appreciates vintage - she "gets" vintage. Not that it's a deciding factor, just my only other primary sounding board, so I'm curious what others think on this issue; Hot Toys vs Vintage vs Price vs Finding and End.

1. What your wife thinks matters to a degree. I'd take it into account, at least. Is there something else in your collection she either "gets/understands" or outright digs? That's a positive. But if there's already something else building a bridge to your inner weirdo, you don't necessarily need to repeat it. If there is not...why not build a bridge, however tenuous?

2. What are your top collecting values?

(a) nostalgia
(b) definitive representations of characters
(c) quality
(d) accessibility (i.e. do you care what others think and whether or not they can appreciate your interest?)
(e) tactility (do you want to be able to handle it, futz it, re-pose it? Or keep it sterile and protected in a sealed case?)

3. You evidently don't want to be a completist. So do you want to be truly minimalist or at most have a handful of key references to something meaningful?

4. Do you have children or will you? What would you most like to share with them?

I think answering these questions may steer you towards a logical end-game. As always, one has to draw their own finish line, to paraphrase Flosi...or it will never end.

Would that be such a bad thing? Maybe not, but maybe you'd like to shift that attention and cash elsewhere. Experiences are better than collections.

The way I personally look at it, 1/6 figures will almost always be redone and improved upon. There is no end in sight and with that comes the desire to keep going. With vintage, what's out there is it. There is no more. That's one of the reasons why I personally prefer vintage over modern. I like the challenge of completing a set, even if it takes years. There's an end. Finish and move on to the next if you so choose. Vintage has also proven to hold it's value better over time.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

I would say Vintage but I am not into posing figures or any of that so 1/6 is not my thing. For that money you can get a really nice carded figure or even a couple nice ones even at today inflated prices. You could even get a nice start to a loose vintage collection.

I try to come here every now and then but I don't buy vinyl. I just skim to see if Aliaz has a job and kids yet, then I skate.

No word on the job yet.

But my GF is getting more pregnancy crazy each day. ;) only 7.5 months left :)

And she has managed to avoid my mother catching on that she is pregnant, which is a real feat considering my mom can usually look at someone and tell if they are pregnant before they know it themselves.

Skate on. :)

I will always choose vintage over modern, because the vintage figures symbolized my childhood. I do think a nice carded figure will display better than a 1/6 figure. I can only imagine what some of my local friends (who aren't collectors) think of the few I have on display.

They do like my complete loose collection, though. :rock

Looking forward to completing in your loose... Wait, what were we talking about? :dunno
