Hope he gets to see it!

Missed signing up for evening classes at a local university by two weeks :( so I will have to wait until January to get started with that. And a karate class. I'm in a "finally do things I never got around to when I was younger"-phase.

I started learning Japanese on my own last week anyway, got most of the Hiragana down sofar. :) I now realise why my last attempt at studying was so tedious and didn't go anywhere, I should have studied something I liked...

Program or book?

I've got the Rosseta Stone level 1 program but it's not really what i expected it to be and i've read that it doesn't really teach you how to use it as part of a conversation. Just the words.

A old friend from school studied Japanese at college for a year and he really recommended the Genki textbook/workbook. And I found a bargain at a local bookstore. Haven't really gotten into them yet since I decided to get a hang of the hiragana/katakana first. But the few pages I've checked out seems like it will be a good book. Alot of grammar explanations. And they come with cd's so you can hear the way it should be pronunced.

I used this guide for the hiragana, they have a similar one for katakana. It worked well for me, got the hang of it pretty fast. And I've started small on Wanikani to learn some Kanji. Same system as the guides really, and sofar I like the approach they have to teaching.

*edit*
If you are interested in the textbook this is the website of the bookshop I got them at. Pretty much half price off compared to the other places I've seen here in Sweden. And I think they ship to Denmark.

Rosetta Stone is a long haul. Level 1 isn't going to get you much but a base of common words. It's not designed to teach you phrases, it works like you learned your first language. As a kid you just learned words at first, then basic phrases and then yeah. I have done the French and it's good if you get to later levels.
