Yeah thats really fun mode. Im up to 11, playing the bigger battles or objective based games will level you up much faster.

So what's the deal with Battlefront online playing? I know it's free right now, but it's going to become a paid subscription, right? When does that start, and how much will it cost?

You need PlayStation plus to play online. There are normally trials for few days with games I may have a week or two one somewhere. It's $60 a year, you may find deals on the card starting tomorrow but I haven't found any yet.
