Whatever the price increase %, my theory that they held back increasing the price and then had to level it up, still stands.

I think that's part of it, certainly. But I also believe that Sideshow's profit-margin on each Gandalf figure has to be higher than that of, say, Aragorn. Probably Indy and General Obi-Wan, too. And that's fine and definitely their right. But the price on this gives one pause, to say the least.

Of course, if this ended up with a total ES of something crazy like 250 for the Ex and 750 for the Regular I doubt many will bemoan the $89.99 price tag. :p

Actually the profit margin on Gandalf will be far lower than Indy or GenObi - and will probably be due to edition size.

And if you look at the new Ghost in the Shell Medicom figure - a standard female body, anime sculpt with a grey jumpsuit and twice the price of Gandalf. Old greybeard is a fantastic bargain!

The funny thing is that I've never purchased a Medicom figure because of several factors- The major one being the price.

I've passed on the Hot Toys ones for the same reason.

Both may show better detailing than SS, but price was a turn-off.

Sideshow was able to provide a quality product at a reasonable price. That's why Sideshow took over as my main 1/6th figure provider. If they were to continue raising their prices, regardless of the detail, I'll be out of the hobby.

So with all of this doom and gloom speak regarding the LOTR 12" line, then give us the Fellowship Nine and be done with it. This was the ONLY line that I was actually going to be a completist on. At $100+ with shipping, it ain't gonna happen.

I think this has been mentioned, but I think it's possible that they have recognized that the LOTR line is stagnating and are raising the prices to make it possible to continue producing figures for the moment, hoping that a core group of fans like us is willing to pay extra to keep the line going. If that's true, then I'm not opposed to the price increase, since it's obviously better to have a small number of figures produced at a higher price than to have the line die. It will all depend on the edition size. If we find out that it's more or less the same as it was for other figures, I don't think this argument will hold any water.

Same here. I would not mind dishing out a little extra $ as long as this line stays afloat. It has so much potential and with the Hobbit on the Horizion there is soo much good in this line to drop it.

Overall, of course. I don't see any way the Gandalf will have an ES as high as either Indy or Obi-Wan.

I was referring to profit margin per unit. And particularly due to assumption of a lower ES. If it comes in surprisingly lower than anyone would have ever imagined then the price will make a lot of sense.

Bormomir 1750 EX, 2000 Reg.
Legolas 1750 EX, 3500 Reg.
Aragorn 1750 EX, 4000! Reg.
Farmair 1250 EX and Reg still TBD.

Hobbits are 1500 EX, 2000 Reg so I think about the same for Gandalf.

I don't know what the sellout times were, probably buried in a thread somewhere, but I know they all took a long time to sellout the exclusives.

I am still agonising whether I should order Gandalf as the Exclusive Edition seems to be still available at Sideshow's website.

But the price point is a bit high especially when I just ordered Indiana Jones and General Obi-Wan. They are all coming in at USD$90 each! Plus shipping, I'd probably be paying around USD$140 for each figure as I do not reside in the US.

Think you are right! Gandalf the Grey it shall be!! Guess, I'll just have to cut down on other non-necessary expense and start saving for Q3 2008.

Hooray! You will not regret it; once the figure is in your hand I know you will be glad you went through with it. This figure totally rocks, I can't wait to have him on my own shelves!
