And interesting idea removing the outer robe:

As did I Maglor. One of the first things I did when futzing.

Actually if we are to pose him movie accurately then with the hat he should wear the outer robe, but without the hat he should lose the robe. Personally I don't care either way do what you want but I'm just saying...

I'm sure he takes off the hat while still wearing the robe in Moria.

He takes off both when he pauses when he's lost and can't decide which way to go. From then on he is hatless and over-robeless.

Here is the correct sequence of events Maglor :

Gandalf enters Moria : overcoat and hatless

Somewhere between entering Moria and the "fork" : overcoat and hatted

Until deciding the correct path : overcoatless and hatless

From the "fork" to Balin's tomb : overcoatless and hatted

Just prior to reading the diary, until his fall : overcoatless and hatless

Hi woodsy , I knew you would be the man who could straighten this whole overcoatless and hatless thing out . Not only that, but you have answered another question I had with your images. Just how low did Gandalf's bag hang?, and there are some quite good reference images there for that. Darn! now I don't have an excuse to go and watch the movie again (not that I need one) .

Just goes to show that hat or hatless, overcoat or overcoatless, there is no wrong way to accurately display this amazing PF.
