the designs aren't the problem... even stuff that was stupid looking ended up being used really well in Hama's comic book...

he even turned the dumb serpentor idea into one of the coolest parts of the series...

and battleforce 2000 served as excellent cannon fodder when he was given the go ahead to kill characters off...

the problem with the movie is it's absolute disrespect for the characters, history and plot... it's not just that the designs are bad... they are OUT of character.

the other problem with the movie is that it appears that it would still suck even if they didn't call it Gijoe...

it's just a terrible movie with idiotic story elements.

If it wasn't GIJOE ... this movie might be somewhat entertaining.

I just can't disconnect my childhood/love for the GIJOE I grew up with in order to accept this.

I agree. Hama did an excellent job with what he had to work with (that being Hasbro's merchandising). Serpentor was given great characterization, as with other outrageous charcters such as Dr. Mindbender and Raptor. This upcoming movie though...ugh.

There were other characters from GI besides laser cobras. And most of them wore CAMO. So....

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

My point being that even though the movie is a radical departure from everyone's candy coated memories of what the Joes were... It's not like Hasrbo themselves didn't make outlandish costume choices. Compared to some of the toys made, the movies costumes are relatively conservative.

I have been a Joe fan since I bought my first figure (Snake-Eyes) and 1982 when they first came out. I was 9 years old at the time and have collected Joe ever since. I even liked Sigma 6 and Sgt. Savage. My older brother collected the ORIGINAL 12" joes and he didn't have an anuerism when the 82 line came out... Those weren't HIS Joes but he understood that GI Joe had become a CODENAME, not just a person. Things change, it's out of our hands sometimes... GI Joe has been trying to exist as a movie for as long as the toyline has been around. Unfortunately when Transformers came out and was a success, Hollywood said "GREAT! What other toy properties can we mine?" and this was ready to go. This was bad timing however because we're in the middle of a rather unpopular war and Hollywood, wanting to reap GLOBAL profits, not just domestic, made some rather hair-brained concessions... i know it sounds like I am defending the movie, but not really. If you don't want to see it, fine. I just got tired of seeing all the posts talking about the "old days" like they are holy and without fault. There were some turd designs back then too!!

And Hama killed a LOT of them off. But you know what? Hasbro's WORST concept was better than this colostomy bag.

True...true. Hama did have a knack for putting a good spin on the whacked-out stuff Hasbro came up with, but I still contest that some of the stories stretched credibility sometimes!

Nobody is saying that the original G.I. Joe
comic books or cartoons weren't believeable
or even stretched the bounds of reality to the
max, but that's because even as kids we all
understood that that was another type of world,
be it cartoon or comic, and the real world rules
don't always apply.

BUT, people are knocking the look and feel of the movie
because since Day 1 we have been bombarded with
promises of a more "real world" and "reality" universe
only to get...this.

I know people will like the G.I. Joe movie and defend it,
but when I look at the trailer, I really don't see 'Joe.
I've read the script and cringed at the unoriginalty
throughout. I think that's the problem. G.I. Joe fills
a niche that very little else could and if you take out
what makes it unique, that niche remains unfilled. :whip

It's like after enjoying award winning Indian buffet and feeling the urgent need to defecate, rushing to a restroom, searching for an empty, clean stall, laying down the seat protector and then relinquishing yourself to heave and ho for a good lot of time on what feels like the mother of all boulders, before satisfactorily rising from the throne on numb legs and pins-and-needle feet and look down upon all that loved labor to find a small, pea-sized nugget. This film is that nugget.
