Re: Speed Racer

No need to sick Irish on me I found other threads...You guys are hardcore thread cops.

No, that's not it. I made the comment because bashing Speed Racer is his favorite thing to do outside of starting Indy threads. :lol

I liked the flick though. :D

What the first week revenues are showing is that basically there is no demographic for this film outside of young boys between 10 and 14 years old. The kids who watched it are now older - and no offense to anyone here - but most of them have emotionally grown as well and have no reason or need to relive the golden memories of sixth grade again.

This is also a movie that has high negatives for people outside the narrow demographic. If you are not into it, most adults have no reason at all to see it. If the W. Bros. had nto been behind it its chances of getting made would have been rather small.

I disagree here. The nostalga factor is 100% why 80s properties are being bought left and right. The kids who were watching these things are now adults with income of their own not dependent on their parents to buy things not to mention a good amount have kids who they loved introducing these things too.

If the Wachowskis' had stuck closer to the source material and made a film that worked in that vein they probably would have made a killing, they tried too hard to modernize it and change it to make it appealing to a new audience essentially cutting out the old.

It obviously didn't work as many attempts to do this kind of thing fall into.

Except Speed Racer isn't from the 80s, it's from 1968, forty years ago, and only had 23 episodes. The kids that watched this are grandparents now.

Actually if you want to get technical Speed Racer is like the Flintstones or other H/B Cartoons, while out of their own timeframe of showing, syndication kept them running far into my childhood even to the point of this generation's childhoods. Speed Racer is from the late 60s but was on during the 70s and 80s and the shot was still taken to nab the 80s generations nostalga. There are quite a few licenses that are older than the 80s but get lumped in with them because of the strong fanbase it acquired.

Okay I'll pretend not to be offended by that, quite a ways from being a grandpa, in fact I think I have to have kids first. I saw the movie yesterday and I have to admit I actually liked it better than Iron Man. As a huge comic book fan I have to say Iron Man was good but it was pretty much the same superhero movie formula, nothing new. It was different something you've really never seen before and pretty much a live action version of the cartoon. I have to admit that it probably was more of the nostalgia factor, but my fiance who has never seen a Speed Racer cartoon liked it as well.

That's why contemporary re-hashings like Scooby-Doo, Josie and the Pussycats, and Underdog were such big financial and critical hits? Live action retreads of old cartoons almost never work.

In this case, the problem isn't that the Wachowskis deviated from the source material, but because they didn't know better to cut out the parts of the source material that were pretty bad even back then, such as the one dimensional, cardboard cut-out characters. Who wants that? These days, even the simplest of characters deserve a bit of nuance.

Nostalgia goes a long way in drawing people in, but once they've had their filling, they'll start to realize the things that made the original so great is now outdated. What comes next is substance, and unfortunately Speed Racer just didn't deliver.

If the original Mach GoGoGo didn't exist, would this movie still be or have done any better? (Given this film would be a totally original property). Movies like Iron Man and Transformers would still stand strong as good movies if the original source had never existed, Speed Racer would not.

I just think that some old cartoons just don't translate to film very well. This one seems to fit that bill. I mean, it's hard to take it seriously at all. The family last name is RACER? And they name their kid SPEED? really?

The characters, and the monkey... while funny.. still just don't really work. It's kind of like if you made a Wonder Twins movie... it would be laughable and odd.

And the telling factor is how well it does financially. This film is stalling badly. It's only been a few days since release and during my last 2 days of work we have had almost completely empty theaters. Some have been entirely empty, and in the afternoon no less.

But to each his own. I can understand if some people enjoyed it...

For the nostalgia factor I am going to have to say that was probably the biggest reason why I saw Speed Racer. I'm almost 30 so the first time I saw Speed Racer was on MTV and then on Cartoon Network in the early to
mid-90's. I'm not of the generation that first experienced Anime like this, Astro Boy, Gigantor and the 8th Man in the 60's but I still enjoyed the shows and I still enjoy them today.
Part of me is still a child and Speed Racer really brought that child out. I am sad to hear that this film did not do well. Not just because I enjoyed the film but because it doesn't bode well for other properties like Thundercats and
Masters of the Universe if movies in the semi-same genre like Speed Racer don't do well. I'm off my soap box.

The worst thing about the movie bombing worldwide (for me) is now there is probably no chance that Medicom makes a RAH Racer X figure to go with their ghey Speed Racer one. I may have actually been interested in Racer X. Oh well. :monkey1

It's not all lost, you could buy the Medicom Jack Shepherd figure and customize your own Racer X. It'd probably turn out like this, give or take a few modifications:

I'm with you, man. I have a whole new respect for Matthew Fox; he looked really cool as Racer X and beat up a ninja in the film.
Hell, after seeing this if Marvel wants to do another Daredevil film Fox would not be a bad choice for Matthew Murdock.

Took my family to see it and we all enjoyed it, although it felt like it ran too long by a good half hour or so at least. My kids were pretty engaged by the colors and movement but the flashbacks upon flashbacks in the opening segment were totally lost upon them. It often reminded me visually of Spy Kids, and probably has the same demographic. Warner poured too much money in this if they thought this was going to be a big draw for all ages.

Yeah, they put up a Hulk banner instead... a "Banner" banner. :lol

They also put up this insanely stupid "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" banner though... I have a feeling I will have to look at it's huge stupidity for months. The banner is GIGANTIC, it's bigger than both our Batman banners, Indy and the Hulk COMBINED. :google

Oh, lord. That sounds awful. :monkey4
