Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

If you smoke weed before seeing this film your head might explode. The opening is like watching 5 caliedescopes at the same time and at the end the track begins to spin in a red and white checkered flury. It had me trippin' and all I had was some M&M's.

Eli I know you have sworn off this film but give it a chance. Have the Wachowski brothers ever done a bad film?

The last Matrix?

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

The rep from Warner Bros said openly in an interview today that the opening was "really disappointing". He also said that they are seriously hoping that the summer season maintains a strong audience that will gain back what was spent.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a sequel and fully expect this to be on DVD by July/August.

Re: So, has anyone else seen "Speed Racer"?

You do know they made two "Matrix" sequels, right? :monkey1

:lol

There are so many actually good big budget films this season that Speedracer will Go! to video soon.

Narnia and Indy will give this crapfest the broom.

When they say that, you know it's a true dud. They almost always figure out a way to spin box office results.

They were good in their own way, kind of like the Pirates sequels. Loved the fights, the villains were pretty cool.
As much as I love the first one, I think Reloaded has the edge when it comes to action. I mean the car chase, the fight with the Merovingian's men and Neo vs the Smiths were all great action sequences in my book.
Revolutions was not what I expected from the closer to the Matrix but I thought it was a good film. The battles at the end with the machines and the final fight with Smith made this a film I would watch again.

The movie is a wreck on the level of recent memorable summer failures like Kingdom of Heaven (which opened with $19.6 mil) and Poseidon ($22.2 mil) — at the domestic box office, at least. Overseas, well, that's another (possibly sadder) story. While would-be blockbusters that fail domestically usually have a chance to recoup their costs in foreign multiplexes (the aforementioned Kingdom of Heaven and Poseidon both did just that), there are reports that Speed Racer may have gotten a flat tire at the international box office as well; the dust still has to settle before we know the full story there.

Wow. Even internationally its doing back. Insiders were sure that this would kill in the Asian Markets......that is not good at all...

Hmm... that would indeed be stunning. I remain a bit skeptical of this early EW report, though. I just can't imagine this completely bombing in Japan and other top Asian markets. If it does, it's an epic bust and may seriously hamper the career of the Wachowski Bros (or at least take their carte blanche priveleges away).

I could totally understand it bombing in Japan. If I were Japanese, I wouldn't want a white guy playing Go Mifune.

I would be SHOCKED if it really boomed in Japan and the asian markets. It's almost a totally freaking anime movie. That being said, I didn't completely hate the film, really didn't have much going for it, but the visuals were amazing.

Seems like matthew fox just phoned it in, but I think that's the way he was supposed to act

Larry Wachowski's mascara must've run really pretty badly when he got these box office returns.

This thing was almost tailored for Japanese Markets. If it DOES bomb overseas it'll completely destroy what the brothers can do from this point on....they'll need to pull off something huge in order to be as highly regarded as they once were.

That's funny. Matthew Fox as Racer X was by far my favorite thing about the movie. And I think it was one of the only times he wasn't playing Matthew Fox in a role. :huh

And :lol and Entropy Chicken. Did anyone else think that Larry/Linda Wachowski played that ugly androgynous truck driver in the movie? :monkey1

Well that sucks. Something unfortunately always has to give and this month, with Indy and Narnia and Iron Man all on the plate it looks like Speed took the hit.
It is ashame really, but when did things change and the Summer movie season began with May? There are other great films coming out this summer but not like the month of May. It's like every week another big movie comes out. I know it sounds great but with the hectic lives of most of us collectors and fans there is only so many times we can go to the movies. Thanks to Iron Man and Forbidden Kingdom I am behind on Harold and Kumar and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Oh well, what can you do.

or they could do a lucas and just finance their own films. if keanu reeves got over $150 million for the matrix films, the brothers probably got 5 times that much.

But one of them may have spent that on dominatrix mistresses and a gender-change operation.
