Rewatching Shin the dialogue subtitles are just way too fast. :google

But there are some pretty brutal building and street civilian kills in that movie as well especially with that googly eye tad pole lol

Both Shin and Minus One make great companion pieces because Shin deals with the stress of immobilization of their SDF for the first time since WW2 under the security treaty.

Shin is about a paralyzed government thru too much action.

Minus One is about a paralyzed government thru inaction dealing with their war mongering demons and a paralyzed man dealing with his own demons regarding that war.

let me first get thru the shock of typing “CHARACTER DRIVEN STORY” in a TOHO Godzilla movie when describing this movie lol

That is what intrigues me most about this new movie.

Are the characters as interesting as the Jaws Trio? Meaning, its just as engaging to watch the "heroes" as it is "the shark"?

Absolutely not lol

You are asking way too much out of TOHO.

It is JAWS trio lite….super lite lol

But guess what TOHO has that JAWS doesn’t?

Godzilla monster Minus One > JAWS shark!

Godzilla from Minus One is officially the best monster of all time, period!

Yes, I just went there.

I didn’t say the best monster movie, I said the best monster.

Just saw it. It's easily the best Godzilla film I've ever seen. It's like an actual movie with characters that you care about...imagine that. Godzilla is awesome too. That atomic breath is awesome. He's like an allegory for the atomic bomb and characters having a second chance to win the war, without their crazy government. Kind of like Rambo and Vietnam in Part II. My girlfriend cried at the end. Very good film overall. I got teary eye too.

Uh oh! Here we go!
As Jye has NEVER been known for hyperbole on this forum I am taking his statements as fact. :lecture

I would dare say equally interesting, but they’re also extremely different types of characters and stories.

Jaws is about the trio finding a way to work together and stop a monster.

The humans in Godzilla are trying to recover from the devastation of the war while simultaneously encountering a monster who can continue to bring war-like destruction to their world.

They are broken people trying to get themselves back together. In the way those journeys are portrayed, the characters are very interesting.

They are not a drunken fisherman, a cop in over his head and a scientist.

Are any of the characters figure-worthy like Quint or Brody?

No. Their outfits aren't that interesting, imo. The main character wears a leather jacket and rides a bike, but I wouldn't say I want a figure of Koichi (that's his name). He's a good protagonist with a good arc, but do I want him on my shelf, nah. Godzilla on the other hand, yes. The boat crew are a bit more interesting visually, but again, not figure worthy, imo.

No, while the human story is fantastic and extremely well performed, no one really stands out in a way that would make you want a figural representation on the shelf. The closest thing outside of Godzilla is plane.

Back from 2nd viewing.

I was already enamored with it after the 1st but now I am firmly convinced that it is my favorite movie of 2023, Godzilla movie and honestly a masterpiece at least for TOHO standards.

The crazy part is that I no longer felt like I needed another Godzilla rampage scene that’s how much I was invested in all of the characters not just the main.

Even the freaking side characters had complete arcs!!!

They literally shoot Godzilla in the mouth with him chomping down on a mine just like in JAWS with the air tank.

You can just make out the first musical note from JAWS in that scene.

The slowed down air raid siren as background music during that early chase scene in the ocean was creepy.

Dial of Destiny ocean scene sucked.

Minus One ocean scenes were spectacular, all of them!

As a huge JAWS fan I can say…. I agree with this statement.

Of course Godzilla was my first love as A kid :)

Godzilla in all his forms (minus 1998, millennium, and megalon suit) is a perfect monster.

JAWS is still scarier.

I can’t think of another film that comes close.

I am hoping to feel the same way with my 2nd viewing.

. Godzilla floating to bottom after climax looked an a lot like a dead Bruce floating to the bottom of jaws.

Missed that.. will have to focus next time.

Well said!!

Holy crap, I just got back from the movie and it was flippin awesome. I only first heard about it a few days ago, and had been kinda turned off by the string of bad American-made ones (I couldn't even get through that Godzilla vs Kong nonsense), but this was easily the best Godzilla movie I've seen yet.

Good story, compelling characters, and a Godzilla who's truly terrifying and a force of nature and not some misunderstood hero or whatever. And he actually looked like himself again, instead of that square-headed thing we've been getting.

Hell the movie even had me tearing up by the end, which is something I never thought I'd experience with a Godzilla movie. 😄
