really? we're not supposed to celebrate the diversity that makes up our country? because honestly if you are not native american then you need to get out.......

well i didn't start it and i've been reading a lot of ignorant statments being made in some of these threads lately. i tried to stay out but i couldn't. i apologize.

Slightly OT, but I'm not sure what celebrating diversity has to do with celebrating foreign COUNTRIES' acts of rebellion or marching around with foreign COUNTRIES' flags.

I love differences in the appearance of people. I love the differences in what people eat. I love the differences in how people treat family. I love the differences in cultural art or whatever. I can even dig differences in religion. That stuff is cool and should be embraced and celebrated.

What I don't understand is what does Cinco de Mayo have to do with that stuff? What does the Mexican flag have to do with that stuff. Same thing with any other holiday that would be based on a foreign countries policies or government actions.

Furthermore, I'm not sure why people celebrate the country and government they or their ancestors LEFT because the government and the country itself was mistreating them or couldn't offer a livable situation.

I'll also add, I work for the government so I receive Columbus day off if I want it. I COME TO WORK AND AM USUALLY THE ONLY PERSON HERE. I boycott that bull___ holiday too because I believe it celebrates some moron that crashed his boat by accident and was too stupid to realize the natives weren't Indians.

This was uncalled for.... If that happened in my city, I would arrest the person for being a DUMBA&%!

What a crock of ____. So it's wrong to be proud of your country? Even if they did wear the clothing to get a rise out of Hispanic students, as long as it's not racist or in poor taste there's nothing wrong with it. I'll be damned if I would punish my kids because of wearing patriotic clothing.

You're being deliberately obtuse to the problem at hand - they were wearing the clothing to get a rise out of the Mexican students, and that in and of itself is wrong. How could you say it's not? Just because you aren't calling someone a derogatory name doesn't mean you can't be racist. Do you not think it's odd that a group of high school guys decided to be patriotic on Cinco de Mayo? I mean, come on!

I don't want to get into it, but Police state comes to mind.
The law is not written for police to ask for "papers please" on every Hispanic person they see. Like any law though, it could be abused. Time will tell. As far as illegal immigration goes though. I'm all for deporting everyone that they find. Sorry so harsh.

Rambling about something you have no clue about...
Priceless...

^Yea I called him on it too. It is quite funny.

My mistake. Like I said ... I don't celebrate May 5th, and I don't claim to know anything about it. I know it is a Mexican holiday. ("I'm not Mexican. I don't plan on being Mexcian. So who gives a hoot if they're socialists. They could be fascist anarchists -- it still doesn't change the fact that I don't own a car." Haha.) I acknowledge the error in the title ... but my point stands nonetheless -- just substitute whatever title for May 5th you'd rather see.

For the record, I wasn't "rambling on" about the subject of May 5th commemoration ... it was an extremely peripheral mistake. The content of my statement remains true.

I'll respond later if this isn't locked by then.

No you're being obtuse! They are patriotic! They love this country! It had nothing to do with the fact that it was Cinco de Mayo! It was a coincidence! They know the Bill of Rights and Constitution by heart and wake up every morning reciting the pledge while facing their framed picture of George Washington! How dare you!

If its offensive to be patriotic of the United States in the US, what is being patriotic of Mexico in the US? Again, celebrating Cinco de Mayo celebrates a COUNTRY, not a culture.

So couldn't it be looked at as the American students ( they aren't Mexican, unless they are citizens of Mexico) celebrating a Mexican national holiday on an American campus to be offensive to Americans?

Psst. What kind of stuff do you want to read in GD? I'll try to do better next time but GD is a pretty broad brush isn't it? Go to the top of the page and hit that Icon that says home. A bunch of different sections pop up there where you may be able to narrow down what you want to read.

Aren't we a bit of a sensitive cranky pants... I actually wasn't referring to you posting it :lol That's fine as this is the section for these kind of threads.

What I'm getting at is that some stupid incident at a HS suddenly becomes the "story of the day" and blown way out of proportion. Its a dumb situation that really isn't worthy of reporting... but 24hr news networks/websites/etc need ratings :lol

it really shouldn't be a controversy. i agree. everyone should have just ignored each other.

Meh, this is no different than the immigration debate as a whole. I respect your opinion and leave it at that.
