I wouldn't mind getting an S&W 500 for the intimidation factor. I'd love to pull it on someone that broke into my house just to see them crap themselves.

if all goes well i will then apply for a COE (Certificate of Eligibility).

In the market for a good defensive, target training, concealed handgun. I've had a few recommended to me ... HK USP Compact .45, Walther P99, Glock 19. All of the reviews I have heard of the USP indicated that it is the top-of-the-line in tactical handguns.

Stopped by a local dealer today and looked at the HK USP Compact .45 -- which runs about $850. The dealer also pointed me toward the HK45 Compact, which he indicated is an upgraded USP .45 (new slide, changeable grip, etc.), and which runs about $1050. He also pointed out the HK P30 9mm.

Any recommendatons for what to look for? Are there alternatives to the USP that are preferable? Are the upgrades between the HK USP Compact 45 and the HK45 Compact worth an additonal 2 or 3 hundred bucks?

For what its worth ... I also looked at a Barrett 50 Cal that was only 12 grand. Haha.

check out the Kimber 3" 1911's. my co-worker let me shoot hers and i was very impressed. very manageable recoil for such a small pistol. if you're on a budget definitely check out the Glock 30. 10 rounds of .45ACP! it might be a bit chunky to conceal though. there's also the thinner Glock 36. limited to 6 rounds.

btw, i've been checking out .357 Sig. anyone with experience on it? it's an interesting round but hard to get.

Meh....I'd rather get a Saiga 12 with an AK conversion...and it can be modified for full auto. Looks much better, and the reload is probably easier/quicker. They come in 5/8/10 magazines or if you drop serious $$ you can get a 30 round drum.

I think that's where I'm leaning as well -- though I was considering the 45 rather than the 9mm (still unsure, though). I still haven't decided whether to go with the traditional HK USP or the new HK P30 or HK45 (the P30 is the 9mm and the HK45 is the 45 ... they're both supposedly upgrades on the USP).

Like I said -- I haven't fully decided whether to go with the 45 or the 9mm (there is also a .40, I think). What made you choose the 9mm over the 45?

My personal opinion, but I would stick to a .45 unless the 9mm you get has an ungodly capacity. I keep a 1911 with an extended magazine and wouldn't think of downgrading caliber.

The 1911 is a great pistol. I like my Walther PPK too - nice and compact.

We've got a Walther P99C... it's got some pop, but the safety isn't what I'm used to.

I have 2 other .45s and just want something with a different flavor. My GF would like to be able to participate when I go to the range, and she doesn't like shooting either of the .45s I own so I figured 9mm would be great for both of us.

i own quite a few guns in various calibers. in the beginning i purchased only .45ACP pistols but unless you reload then the cost of ammunition can get pricey. shooting 9mm is a lot cheaper than 45 or 40. i don't shoot my 45's as much due to cost and availability. i'm saving my good ammo stash for emergency use only.

btw, i'll be adding .40S&W to the collection.

I usually buy ammo by the brick at gun shows so the prices are usually $$$ no matter what caliber I buy. But yeah, .45 is expensive by the box so I'd recommend it only sparingly for self defense and get a cheap 9mm or .22 for range plinking. Kimber even has that cool .22 conversion kit for their 1911s.

btw, i'll be adding .40S&W to the collection.

I had a springfield XD .40 when they first came out. Pretty great little gun, but I'm not a huge fan of the trigger with the safety feature built in.
