don't let the umbrella bug you- its not there just for fun, it's meant to tell a story. According to JSC the rain represents the impending danger and the Spidey umbrella represents Spiderman trying to protect her from it. I think the closed eyes and smile hint at sadness and her death. Love these pieces a lot, they have a ton of meaning.

...so in a symbolic sense, she really did have a Spiderman umbrella.

At first when I didn't like it, I just made up that it could be a reflection of Spidey. Or like in the show and comics when he would use his spidey signal.

I wish sometimes the eyes were open, as gwen always seemed so much more beautiful with opened eyes.

HOLY ****!!! Totally picked that at random! That has so much meaning going with the comi.....weird.

So here is the problem, the peg is out of the body, ss told me to destroy the whole body just because this peg.

Stop trying to intellectualize this statue. He put her with a spidey umbrella because no one would know who she was without it. It is a fun statue of gwen frollicking in the rain, with thoughts of love for spidey. Closed eyes do not symbolize impending death

Except the umbrellas broke.

:slap Art is symbolism- and I didn't "intellectualize" it, J Scott Campbell did.

J. Scott Campbell: Certainly! Gwen was the first design I worked on. Since her story in the comics is a tragic one, I wanted to hint at those overtones in some way. I think the umbrella, as simple of an addition as it is, adds just enough of that implied weight, without taking away anything from the loveliness of her charm and femininity.

The idea that Spidey – Peter – is protecting her from ‘the storm’ is also hopefully implied by the umbrella. It was a goal of mine to give her a real sense of grace and movement that I really think translated beautifully to the sculpt, done by Steve Schumacher at Sideshow.

I bet he didn't expect that one :lol

I wonder what he was trying to symbolize with the black cat perched on a ball of wool yarn?

Yeah art is a matter of perspective. If she didn't have that spidey logo on the umbrella no one would know who she was. just a pretty girl walking in the rain. so whatev's. Same reason he had the MJ statue draped in spidey's costume.

now don't get me wrong I have the gwen stacy statue, because i think it's beautiful, all that deep meaning stuff is a buncha phooey. and I would have gotten it without the spidey logo.

True fans would have. The rain coat, the head band, the purple skirt. I knew it was gwen before I saw the umbrella.

As for Black Cat, that's not her official pose or anything. If Mj and Gwen are an example, I'm sure they will make something also symbolic to her relation to spidey, as well as her personality.

Art to me is emotion. ex. Music is audible emotion. Gwen's emotion is tragedy and the statue has lots of little mysteries built into it. MJ's emotion is longing, Spiderman is off doing his thing and she's left behind with his suit's arms wrapped around her wishing he was here. Black Cat is simply comedy- she's a cat playing with Spidey yarn- i.e. she has Pete wrapped around her little finger.

I wouldn't call it phooey, it helps us to relate to the piece, using feelings we've all felt.

I think thats the associative emotion you have attached because you know the story. if she knew she was gonna fall offa building I think she'd worn a parachute. it's fine if JSC wanted to capture her tragic life in this, I for one am glad he failed because this is a very happy depiction of her. Sad people would never have prepared and looked this stylish in a rain storm. Now if you wanna talk about how those shoes could never be worn by anybody cause the heels don't align properly with the ball of the shoe, that's a deep meaning conversation i could get into:)

I can pretty much guarantee that once you get her you'll be glad you did. As soon as she was shipping I used the $20 code they had. She's the only statue that has made it out of the cave into the living space.

Pretty much gives me free shipping. Hmmmmm...
