...From the grave, because the Sega Dreamcast has been dead (for the most part) for about 6-7 years now. It is and will always be my favorite video game system. I bought it on launch day 10 years ago to the day and loved the launch games I bought with the system day 1 - Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur - and enjoyed the Dreamcast's steady, unique and immensely creative game library in the short couple of years that followed. My favorite game would probably be Shenmue, but I hold a spot in my heart for Sonic and Seaman.

I also want to eulogize Sega, a former giant in the industry that has become a mere shadow of their former selves. Hopefully, there'll be a second chance at console success for the company sometime in the future.

Now, on to the celebration...

IGN.com has done some great features and articles for the Dreamcast's 10th aniversary, including a retrospective and Top Ten Dreamcast Games list, found here: https://games.ign.com/articles/102/1021451p1.html

1UP.com has done a wonderful memorial feature for Sega's last great system, with lots of great facts and stories. Read it here: https://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3175865

If you like podcasts, Bitmob.com (a start-up site from ex-1up.com and EGM members) recorded a special Dreamcastiversary episode. You can also find some great articles celebrating the console here: https://bitmob.com/index.php/mobfeed/mobcast-episode-019.html

Publishers are actually still releasing Dreamcast games, albeit very few and VERY far in between. The latest, and perhaps last is Rush Rush Rally Racing, which you can read about (and find purchase links) here: https://bitmob.com/index.php/mobfeed/new-dreamcast-game-announced.html

And finally, in related Sega news, A new Sonic game has been announced just a few moments ago. Good news, this new Sonic game will be a brand new, 2D HD game that will take Sonic back to his roots: https://kotaku.com/5355153/sonic-returns-in-new-2d-hd-game

Happy 10th.

Still have it installed ! Marvel vs. Capcom, Virtua Tennis, All the shooting games you can name !!! *sigh*

The Dreamcast is the only one of my old consoles that I regret selling. I miss playing Ready 2 Rumble and House of the Dead on it.

me and my ex used to go all night with House of the Dead. Had to change the guns twice because they break so easily.

Yeah those guns were not durable, but fortunately light gun games were so short!

One of my very earliest online MMO-esque experiences was with Phantasy Star Online, which I spent a whole week during Christmas (visiting my parents at the time) just spending time in that world. Oh gosh, the nostalgia is washing over me...

I still have it. It was a great system back then. Marvel vs Capcom 2, Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue were one of my favorite games on Dreamcast. Me and bro would always play MVC2 all the time. Very addicting. What l liked about Jet Grind Radio was the cel shaded graphics. Really cool art style. The game was difficulty sometimes, but still a fun game. Shenmue had some pretty impressive graphics from the character models, the environments and so on. I really liked the cinematic musical score, and the story. I must say it changed my life. RIP Dreamcast : (

Man, the Dreamcast brings back so many good memories. I loved that system, I used it to surf the internet and everything. Still remember how the web browser looked and loaded and everything. :lol

My favorites games on it have to be Soul Calibur and Shenmue. I had such a great time with those games, especially Shenmue. That was such an epic game for it's time and I just totally got immersed in it. It totally changed my perspective on video games and just made me love them all the more and the music was just awesome. I still miss it some to this day.

R.I.P. Sega Dreamcast, you were a great system. :duff

The DC was, and still is my favourite console. I play on it more than i do with my PS3 or Xbox 360. I still prey that someday there will be another Shenmue

:chew

me too...I still have my hopes that sometime in the future Sega will put the gloves back on and make another console. Highly unlikely though because there is so much competition right now. Could you guys imagine what it could've been if Sega decided to put a DVD in it??? I believe that alone would've made the Dreamcast last that generation.

~~that video brought back some serious memories. my only problem with that list is that Soul Caliber needs to be higher on it. Seriously, I played that game more than any of the others.

~~~and by the way--- I still play my SATURN on a regular basis. How's that for being a Sega fanboy??? We should start up a Sega fanclub!!!!
Great another fan of Shenmue it's my all time favorite game i've played both of them to death and it's such a shame we'll probably never finish the story. :(
I loved the Dreamcast and it was indeed a great system. R.I.P :(
still use dreamcast all the time..mostly to play genesis and nes games though. but virtual tennis sucked days from my life
Well I never completed the second one. I have it sitting on my shelf, but I have my Xboxs in storage so I can't play it until I get a bigger place.
When you get them out of storage be sure to play it as it's still good even by todays standards. :)
What is sad to read is that piracy played a part in the systems demise. I know some of us have debated copying games before. Here yah go! And thanks ^^^^ heads! :banghead
I agree with that. While pirating did result with poor games sales, its also one of the main reasons the Dreamcast is still very popular.
I never pirated any of the games until well after Sega closed the case on the Dreamcast, but it is pretty awesome how you can do just about anything with the system. I still stand firm on my grounds that not including a DVD drive is one of the main reasons it didn't last very long.
I had one... regretted buying it too. I only played a few games, nothing else came out.. it was just poorly managed. Nice concept though, good graphics and menus... but just wasn't done right.
It was the video game money pit for me, just wasted cash.
Sorry you feel that way Josh, but I assure you that if you played any of the games on that top 10 list you'd feel a lot differently.
~~I remember going to the Gamestop release party that day. All the employees were wearing the Orange shirts that said "Its thinking" and handing out orange Dreamcast balloons. I think I had $500 worth of stuff on top of the system to pick up that day. I literally had 4 controllers on order, memory cards, Power Stone, NFL 2K, and several other games that were releasing that day. I even took that day off of work just so I could spend the entire day playing it.
