so out of curiosity which episode is your favorite? I like the 1st one best with the death star, the trench run, obi-wan vs. vader duel, the overal classical feel to it. Though i like the 3rd film a lot for the emperor played masterfully by Ian, the second death star battle, luke's green lightsaber, darth vader's redemption by luke.

Empire was my favorite as a kid cuz of the AT-AT's, yoda, and bespin duel with vader. Now that i'm older think i favor the 1st film most of all. Well that's my 2 cents and i would like to hear what u guys think.

Not much to say. I agree with everything you said. :goodpost:

Geek consensus would put Empire on top, and I love Empire, but something about the original film still sticks with me in a way that no other Star Wars film does. It could stand alone as its own film and work brilliantly, which isn't the case for any other Star Wars movie (and isn't likely to be the case for any others moving forward), it is chock full of iconic images, scenes, and performances. Ultimately, I think it gives me the most rewarding viewing experience. It's a straight-forward morality play in many ways, but also has a fair amount of complexity and characters with nuance like Han and Leia. The conflict and drama are high (Deathstar blowing up Leia's planet, Obi Wan and Luke's uncle and aunt dying), but the resolution is extremely satisfying (blowing up the Deathstar, getting metals, feeling optimistic), plus I have more nostalgia for the first one. It might have been the only one we actually owned on the Betamax when I was a kid. My daughter just turned 5, and I think she's old enough to handle the first film now, so I'm excited to get a chance to watch it with her.

I go back and forth but tend to favour Star Wars over ESB because it's straightforward, self-contained and burned itself into my brain at what...four years old?

On a related note I've gone Full Nerd this year obsessing over what could minimally represent each film. I decided on Sandtroopers and R2 (their quarry) for Star Wars, the Probe for Empire and Speeder Bike for Jedi.

It's actually a really difficult exercise given the depth of the material. I'm sure everyone else's list would be different.

Empire used to be the clear cut winner but now I'd say it only barely edges out SW. Not because my feelings on ESB have diminished but rather they have elevated for SW. As you guys have said it's just so, so damn classic. Great energy and just a very balanced story.

SW, it's just classic. I used to love empre more too but as I have gotten older I aprreaciate the first much more now than as a kid.

Its funny you mentioned that. I looked at Vader on bass and thought Gene Simmons
