My wife knows she married a geek. She's been very cool about my collectibles so long as the family's financial needs always come first.

I'm single and spoiled. Not afraid to admit it. I own my own house and pay all my bills first. I'm a high-end collector. I collect nice 1:6 figures, statues, prop replicas, fancy books and autographs. Not at all cheap. But I shop around and spend responsibly. Someday I'll be married and have kids and then I will collect around my responsibilities as they happen.

About the whole lying thing, I don't think it's bad. I've lied in the past about how much things cost. I don't have to do it now so I don't. But some people are touchy about money and I know who they are. So whenever one of those people asked about a price, I would tell them it was $450 if I really paid $500 -that's more of a white lie and not hurting anything. If someone said that they paid $200 when they really spent $500 -then that's a big lie and it's hard to justify that kind of excuse. Nothing wrong with a white lie.

Yeah at my house here how it goes...

ME: babe I bought this crazy expensive figure...
HER: I cant beleive you spent that!!
ME: You'll live, lets get dinner

Yeah sometimes i tell her and sometimes I dont. Its not a big deal to me and as others noted, she knows Im a nerd its better than me buying strippers and drugs.

I have my money and my fiancee has his money. He collects military weapons which are far more expensive than what I buy. He doesn't need to lie to me about what he spends on his collection and I don't need to lie about what I spend on mine. We both know that bills come first, then retirement, then savings. Whatever is left over we can do with as we wish.

If you establish at the onset the understanding of how money will be handled in the relationship, then there is no reason to skirt the issues of how much something costs.

Its funny in this thread a few of you are saying everyone knows I am a geek or a nerd... like collecting movie related items causes that association. I don't feel that way at all though some people who see my rather vast 1/6 collection don't immediately understand my fascination. If someone is appaled by the figures or their price tag they can suck it as far as I am concerned, I don't lie because I am not ashamed - I love this hobby and I always will. I'll be waiting for a pre-order when I kick it at 101...

Update: MIB OC Bats came the other day, it is officially a Christmas present from the kids to me. My girlfriend signed for it and put it away in her cupboard. She knows I'm itching to get that baby open. "I checked it and it's all ok. So don't even think about opening it beforehand". She says making me wait for it for 2 months was worth every penny :lol

:impatient:

You collect dolls. You are an adult male. Ergo you are a nerd. And not only do you collect dolls, you talk about it on forums with other adults who collect dolls. Double nerd for you I'm afraid!

I was a nerd long before I started collecting one sixth. I'm totally cool with who I am. I'm a geek, nerd, otaku, whatever.

Bragging too loud about the value of a collection can turn somebody into the target for a break-in. A good reason for being modest about the price of things. I think if I had a high-end collection comparable to some members here I'd also have an alarm system on my house to match.

Nope.

Wow, I felt extravagant for spending $40 USD on Sideshow figures! My first 1/6 SS figures cost me around $8 USD! LOL

I am not ashamed of passing up figure after figure. What I could make with $400 is more than I could ever buy with that same amount.

I never knew this thread existed before Adoptedscot posted this as a link on that 'What should I collect' thread and locked it up. This will serve as a confession box for me.

ALL Yes! The prices of ALL my collectibles have been misquoted to both my parents AND my girlfriend. If they knew what the ACTUAL prices of each of my figures are...

Id never lie to my wife about what I spent on something, she knows my collection and what its worth. Most of my pieces have gained in value since I purchased them so she really looks at it different than me just throwing money away. Eventually I will get out of the hobby, I am certain of that...and she knows I'll be able to get money back out of it so I know she don't think its a huge deal. Not only do I work my a$% off for the money I earn at my full time place of employment but I also make money other ways ( Legally of course). I use extra money I earn to buy my stuff so technically it does not come out of my normal salary, so not much she could really say about it.

Besides, she just forked out $1000 on a new camera......so yeah. Anyway my wife loves me and supports anything I want to do. Really if it makes me happy she wants me to do it, though I think sometimes she is a tad bit annoyed sometimes about a purchase I made. Oh well, she will get over it :).

Ive never really had to explain to anyone how much I spend on figure's except my dad. He thinks its a cool hobby and don't see anything wrong with it. In fact, he has thought about purchasing some star wars related merchandise from sideshow after I introduced him to there wonderful products. I really do not think anyone else in my family would care enough about it to know about it. I am a nerd and have always been into this sort of thing......they never really understood it and don't really care if they ever do. I enjoy it and I think its fun to try and obtain figures....all that matters really.

Only lied 1 time to a delivery guy who asked if they were expensive.

One of my Detolfs is visible from the front door when open, so I figured it was better to tell him they "didn't cost a lot". Better for him to think they are cheap toys then get the idea that my house is a good target for a robbery :monkey1

Thats what concerns me. I finally have a collection that is formidable to me, and I have my home owners and car insurance through Geico, I have talked to 2-3 different people who handle my home owners, explained to them what my collection is and they just won't cover it, I don't know why.
Someone mentioned collectors insurance to me once, but I don't know any companies to dial up about that.

Anyone with info on that?
