I can't say that I have strong feelings about it, but talking about recarding figures like this will get you run out of the Rebelscum Vintage forums on a rail. I personally wouldn't mind if reproductions of vintage carded figures were sold, as long as they were clearly marked as such, but most people there see it as a huge threat to the hobby that they've invested so much in, and I guess I can understand that too.

There was also a huge blowup over there recently because a new member casually mentioned that he opened up a Gamorrean Guard figure with a badly beat up card (he wanted a mint figure and figured that was a good way to get one). I was pretty shocked at the reaction it got. There was a lot of talk about "destruction of irreplaceable pieces of history" and comparisons made to burning the Mona Lisa, if you can believe it. Although to be fair, there were quite a few people who defended him. While I can sort of understand where the people who condemned him were coming from, they acted like complete zealots. To be honest, the more I read of that forum, the less I really want to get serious about collecting vintage. I still want a complete loose set, and maybe some of the vehicles, but that's basically it. No carded stuff at all, I think.

That does sound a bit extreme. But if the card is beat to hell and the bubble is yellowed so much that it makes a silver coin look gold (for example) then really, is it that much of a mistake to open? I have a few POTF carded figs, and I dug them so much that I wanted to recard a few of the more rarer figs that I don't have the cash to buy carded. I picked up a few of their cards for figures that never made it onto a POTF card too just for fun. I have several loose too, but wanted to have that wow factor with them.
I do understand some of the concern over recarding though. If someone was not educated enough to know the signs of repro, they could get taken for a lot of cash. To me, that is a very legitimate fear.

Hey, "Unsung Hero"... I stopped by my Target today to pick up one of those Snowspeeders for you, and they were all gone. The only Vintage vehicle they had left was the Target Exclusive Tie Fighter. Sorry man, I tried...

No problem, thanks for trying!

I've been thinking about the recards as a display option for me. I know there is one recard kit seller on eBay that said his cards state on the back that they are not original.

I remember reading that thread and feeling sorry for the guy. As someone who recently got back into vintage collecting, that pretty much turned me off that section of the forum. It just didn't seem like a very inviting place for a new member. If someone wants to open a beat-up carded figure, that's their choice. Personally, I'd rather have a nice collection of loose or recarded figures on display instead of beat-to-Hell carded figures. :dunno

I have a sealed snowspeeder in the Target vintage packaging if you're interested. I bought it late last year and decided not to do anything with it since I'm putting my money into my vintage collection.

If unsung hero doesn't take it i'm interested.

Last weeks Snow Storm brought record low temps and snow in the Southwest made it possible for some fun photo ops.

My thoughts exactly. And for the record, I bought my recarding kits from that same seller. I don't think that they actually do say that though.

I may, depending on price and shipping. The upside of getting it from him was that we live very close together and shipping would be cheap.

Also, picked up the new Mace Windu and he rocks. I know it's basically the same from 2007 with a new hilt and headsculpt, but what a difference that headsculpt makes!

I picked up a Death Star Escape Luke at a local Wal Mart yesterday. They had the R5-D4 as well, but that looks identical to the previous release of that character. No sign of the ceremonial Han, Gree, Cody or the Stormtrooper.... BTW, does anyone know if that Starmtrooper is any different that the removable helmet version from a couple years ago?

Anyway, Luke isn't bad. His legs are still a little too close together for my tastes though so it's hard to get any cool, dynamic poses.

I need to stop looking in this thread since I'm trying to concentrate on vintage right now. :panic:

Stay on target... stay on target...

Personally I don't get the appeal of recarding a figure... looks cool I guess; but why seal up a figure that's gotten to be out in the world and breathing?

And of course bellyaching about someone opening a vintage figure is just as dumb, if anything it would make the carded ones they have infinitesimally more valuable :lol Anyone got a link to that... I'd love to give it read.

Maybe a full recard isn't the answer, but I wouldn't mind having the cards to display behind the figures. It would take up a crapload of room, though.

Right here, my friend!

Well, the logic was that there are a finite number of carded figures remaining, and even if it's in bad shape, some collectors might still want it. It's a more holistic view of the hobby, and in theory I agree with it, but they were taking it much too far.

The thing is, I think if someone had posted the exact same thing a few years ago, no one would have batted an eye, but now that AFA has introduced a "U" grade for figures, there has been some pretty stupid stuff going on. For those who don't know, the U grade means "uncirculated" and involves sending an unopened toy to AFA to remove from the package, grade, and place in an acrylic case. I think the original idea was that they would be using toys in very bad condition packaging, but some people have sent very rare figures with very nice packages to be opened, just because they thought they could sell a U graded toy for even more than the packaged one. This may not seem to make sense, but some collectors focus on loose stuff and are very fixated on AFA grades, so it's not inconceivable that a loose U graded figure of a certain character with a grade of AFA95 could sell for more than one in a very nice package.

Anyway, I think the reaction to what that guy was saying about opening the Gamorrean Guard was an overreaction caused by these other things that had been happening.
