I'm not sure that an afterlife, barring an undead one, would be in the spirit of Martin's stories. But, for the showrunners, it would make as much sense as anything else!

What if its like LOST... and everyone is dead? The never beat the Night King. They're just dreaming walking-dead.

I mean, I know you're most likely being facetious but everything in Lost actually happened to them. Only season that involved death was the last one. The flash sideways was the afterlife, not the island.

Lost, now that's an ending that pissed me off. Worst ending in television history.

They painted themselves into a corner and didn't know how to resolve the many questions they had raised.

That should be the example when telling writers why they need to start a story with a actual ending already in mind

The worst part of LOST's ending was that JJ and the producers assured the audience after Season 1 that they weren't dead... because that's what everyone was guessing right off the bat. Then what did they do when JJ got busy with Mission Impossible an outgrew TV? They made them dead.

Anyway, maybe Arya is dead. Remember how they were paralleling Arya being trampled with the Hound being beaten in cross-cuts? Well, he died... maybe she died too. Parallel.

Jon: Gooooooooooo! Go! GO!
