I think the same could be achieved in the factories in China if more attention was paid to QC. Sideshow just seems to have a higher acceptable fail ratio for pieces now than it had back in the day. That is really the problem.

Producing these type of items here in the USA would make it cost prohibitive for many collectors.

Yeah wonder if they were trying to save money and skip the psylocke primer on the statue. So then alot of them had paint cracking on the statues and base. What's worse is they will all most likely crack in a year or so when SS won't cover them anymore. What a nightmare those were. I had return 3 of those and they all just keep happening. Then the lazy eye issues. :slap

I would rather have top painters do the work here in the US near flawlessly where you can actually be on top of things if there are any problems. If hundreds of people have no problem paying $400 for a Batman PF I doubt people wouldn't pay an extra $100-200 to have it professionally done with it being top quality. I would pay $600 for a 1/4 figure if it looked as good as a perfect prototype.

Dude, get real. You'd be paying 600 for the paintjob only. Probably even more.
A OOAK 1/4 statue sets you back at around 4-5k

You did mention professional painters though because you want prototype quality pieces.

you should try and contact people like John Allred, Joe Dunaway, Saul Alvarez, etc. and see how much these guys charge.

What other company can afford the licenses let alone the talent. It sure isn't bowen, koto or gentle giant

It's just getting the license and not entirely about the money. None of those large licenses will even look at you unless you have an established record.

The talent is easy. All you need is to hire for an AP sculpt + paint, then the chinese factory takes care of the rest.

It's not just $100-200 difference per, much higher. The average wage for those "painters" in china is about $500 a month, usa you are looking at $5000 a month for entry level painters, add office cost, medical, insurance, and all the other additional expenses of being onsite in the usa, it will not be competitive at all.

I have no doubt most of those chinese factories can produce the work we expect like in the photos, it just sideshow has no onsite QC and dont give a damn. Without proper management, on top of those chinese workers have NO CONCEPT what is expected quality wise or understand this hobby/characters in general, you ended up with all those QC problems. If properly managed, they can produce great work.

It really comes down to getting the license, it was a stone wall to try get any... i guess you can also try for the less popular small licenses, but those statues wont sell well and is risky.

It's clear that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Well I just completely disagree with you.

You say that Sideshow is a collector's company and I agree to a point but a lot of people buy statues for the quality of the statue and not an edition size or what have you.

Sideshow makes some of the best statues so I think there's no way that even they got rid of ES (which they never will anyway so moot point) people would still by their products.

That may be the case in some instances, but I suspect there are more or less talented painters that can be hired, as well. For SSC pieces they often don't require the skill and nuance that HT/Enterbay figures do, so they may hire cheaper, less skilled painters in the context of Chinese factories.

OK I just called sideshow and asked if this statue is going to be an open ES or not.

And their answer: unfortunately we don't know yet whether this will be an open ES or not, we can't confirm it right now.

Based on that response, I took it as this will indeed be an open ES.

So I went ahead and asked them to cancel my order and demanded my NRD back. And they did.

I will wait for the in hand pics from you guys, the paint spray on his eyes doesn't seem too convincing to me. And if I like the in hand pics I may order it again or maybe find a good deal from retailers in the after market. Heck I may order it again from Sideshow if I really really like it, but for now THERE IS NO REASONS to give sideshow my $80 NRD now when I can always place my order ANYTIME I want.

Well I called SSC when the Batman 1:1 Bust first came up as a preorder & ask if itwas an open ES or not? I was told it was an open ES. Several months later, it had an ES number.

I really don't think you can rely anything that the customer rep says. I would ask Mike T or someone higher-up to find out if it's an open ES or not? I believe the ES would be similar to the Rulk comiquette at 1500.
