Tell me Hubert, do you think Hot toys And sideshow will both survive, or just sideshow?

I've had some mixed experience with AFX. They used to be my primary source for pre-orders 6-8 years ago, but after a string of pre-orders never being fulfilled while other companies got product, I sent numerous emails but was never able to get my issues resolved. Finally I told them I was going to cancel all my pre-orders and take all my business elsewhere if I didn't get a detailed response with explanations to the problems, and that's ultimately what ended up happening.

FYI, they are 'based' out of Hawaii with a warehouse in CA, so shipping to the east coast can be a bit slow. Their shipping rates were always pretty excessive too.

Like I said, it's been years since I ordered from them, maybe they've gotten better.

I'd chalk that up to sideshow attempting to go after the aftermarket.
people pay crazy money for some of the older releases.. so sideshow now wants that money instead.

Hmm... Yet... i can go into the for sale section rightnow.. and get many recent, sold out hot toys releases for CLOSE to original retail, many months after they've sold out....with ease.. its as if... the market is getting flooded as prices go up...

why does this seem so familiar...

oh... right... comics in the 90's.

:exactly: same thing comes to mind.

Agreed on the tie in to 90's comics. I think these tactics will only hurt Sideshow in the long run. Short term gain at the expense of long term customer loyalty is not a winning formula. I have been a Sideshow customer since 2007 and I have severely cut back on what I buy direct from them because of these tactics and their general change in attitude toward their customers.

Well I took a shot. I definitely wasn't going to pay more at sideshow. I'm in NY and shipping for both Robo & Ed came out to $24.00 so it's not too bad.

I'm in NY as well. I'm looking at the final price for both them and I'm very tempted. $677 compared to $740 from SSC.
Anyone else want to chip in on their experience with them?

Wow! Freakin' awesome figure! I don't collect Robocop. But this figure, the chair, and ED-209 make for a beautiful set of figures.

My guess, is that if SSC would continue on the path that we fear they're taking, both will survive, but there'd be changes. Drastic changes, from their partnership to the market itself. And if I were to predict who would suffer more, it would be HT. If one's going to have more financial losses, it would be HT, the manufacturer, the one who produces the goods from scratch.

Diamond is having quite the monopoly in comics distribution. The downfall of comics must have affected the revenues of Diamond as a distributor, but the publishers -- the ones who pay everyone from the people who conceptualize, write and draw up to the printing of the books, are the ones suffering more losses. 90K copies sold in the 90's would get a book cancelled. Now it would make a top 10 book.

However, comic publishing is different in a way compared to toy manufacturing. DC and Marvel and others like Dark Horse and Kirkman's Skybound sometimes spend more than earn from their comics, but they still keep publishing them for visibility and maintain market potential outside print. It's the merchandise outside comics based on the comics that make these publishers earn big bucks nowadays -- from movies, TV Series, clothing, and yes, toys. Comics is a source material, Toys are a byproduct. Unless HT would start making their own line and maybe sell them to animation studios or movie outfits like what happened to GI Joe and Transformers in the 80's, then HT would suffer more loss with their toys compared to how much publishers do with their comics, while SSC would still be happily distributing whatever they have.

Makes sense. I Keep reading that Hot toys is pricing people out left and right with rising prices, I was priced out a while ago myself, but not completely... Though that may change. at one point, I was getting EVERYTHING the released.

These days, I've cut back. I've restricted myself to ONE version of Each marvel character they do, and will start selling off the older ones to help pay for a newer one, if I want it.
So far, the Iron man Mark 7 is my favorite. skipping all the ones from IM3. none of them really speak to me.
I'll probobly sell my Avengers Thor to get the Dark world one.

I've Dropped their DC stuff entirely

I'll probobly get their Star Wars releases, as one every 2-3 years is manageable.

However, I continue (for now) to buy Sideshow 1/6th. though I do cherry-pick those.

anyways, I onder if we will see a drastic reduction in price from HT once things DO go sour.

The high cost is negated by the fact that the figure doesn't need to be snapped together like its predecessor. That was a terrifying experience for me as a complete HT newbie at the time.

That's my attempt at justifying HT/SS's new pricing hikes. Man, time flies.

Like YB, I don't do any pre-orders with AFX. As of a couple of years ago they didn't have their **** together, and weren't very responsive to customers. I like to go with something I can count on.

Very nice. But I feel like I do not know what I am getting for $300. Meaning the die cast. Not familiar with this material in 1/6.

First we had rubber figures that would rot, now we have die-cast figures that will rust in 5 years. Go figure. :monkey1

I don't think that Die-Cast metals rust, as they are mostly made of non-ferrous (iron) metals. However, they can still suffer from other types of corrosion that could hasten the deterioration of the material, especially when completely strip off of paint.

It LARGELY depends on a combination of what TYPE of diecast metal was used, what type of paint was used, HOW they were painted, how many coats, and how much you handle/touch them.
