^Good point. We probably do overestimate the appeal and popularity of 80's properties. And although collecting high-end figures is gaining in popularity, we are all still a pretty rare minority that cherishes things from our childhood/past enough to spend the money we spend on these collectibles. Show anyone from your childhood your Marty McFly figure and the majority will surely be impressed and amazed with his detail/realism. But tell them the price tag and the majority will also probably tell you you're insane.
I was fortunate to have had a great childhood and have many fond memories growing up. These toys bring back a lot of that for me and help me stay young, at least at heart. It's not that my present is bad; I just miss those simpler times and carefree days. Makes me want to build my own Delorean time machine, which is actually something on my bucket list
