If someone left our *present* to go back and change something, it would change the moment they left. And would continue to change depending on what they did in the past. But all these changes would happen together instantly for someone in *our present*. Like a photocopier spewing out different alternate timelines.
Read Everett's Many Worlds theory, which is now being hailed as ground breaking.. At the exact point where someone had the ability to travel in time and it was going to happen in the future, the past would change. It wouldn't need the actual act of time travel. Just the 100% definite that it would happen. The future and past would become invariably mixed up and infinite alternate possible realities would occur. If time travel was invented then the future and past would immediately change. As people at any point our future would immediately appear and immediately have changed our past.
Soooo.... technically, time travel is never going to be invented. Or we would already know about it.
